Custodian** St. Joseph CES, Bowmanville 25 h/w (12 m/y) 6:00 pm - 11:00 pm Note: In cases where an internal applicant from a different classification applies, that candidate will be required to participate in an interview and will be subject to reference checks to determine eligibility for the position subject to Article 12.02 of the collective agreement. For greater clarity, the interview will be worth 70% and the reference check 30%. Job Function To maintain the cleanliness and security of building(s)/grounds/equipment; and perform minor maintenance and servicing of mechanical, electrical or plumbing services.

Job Description: Perform the following duties:

  • Prepare school for entry; check for efficient operation of electrical and mechanical equipment;

secure buildings as arranged with the Principal and/or Supervisor.

  • Sweep, strip, scrub, rinse, wax, polish and/or buff hard surface floors and stairs; vacuum rugs and

carpets and spot clean; wipe and polish ledges, furniture; clean blackboards; wash windows and walls; maintain cleanliness of staff room appliances.

  • Clean and disinfect washrooms, door handles, drinking fountains and sinks; replenish expendable

supplies.

  • Collect refuse and prepare for disposal; i.e., empty pencil sharpeners, waste baskets, etc.
  • Remove snow and debris from entrances and walkways; sand and/or salt if necessary.
  • Make routine checks of building(s), playground, playground equipment, fences, roof drains, etc. for

hazardous situations (loose bolts, broken chains, glass, poisonous weeds, etc.); maintain a playground equipment log.

  • Maintain presentability and attractiveness of grounds; i.e., pickup/remove litter, cut grass, trim

shrubs, weed beds, etc.

  • Perform minor maintenance and servicing of mechanical, electrical or plumbing services; i.e.,

lubricate motors, repair furnishings, service cleaning equipment, remove debris from roof, replace bulbs/fuses, reset timers, etc.

  • Report and request emergency maintenance; i.e., broken windows, mechanical, electrical or

plumbing problems.

  • Move, arrange, assemble and/or adjust furniture and equipment; receive furniture and school

supplies; i.e., books, paper, etc.; assist with the distribution and/or storage of supplies.

  • Order and maintain an inventory of custodial supplies.
  • Maintenance of the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) as required.
  • Record meter readings, salting and/or sanding log; check fire extinguishers and assist with

conducting fire drills.

  • Direct student summer help and check work performed, if applicable.
  • Provide in-service and training for supply custodial staff.
  • Maintain familiarity with vital services (i.e., gas, oil, electricity, water); location of valves, electrical

panels, dampers, etc.; operate the computerized energy management system (heating and air conditioning), fire, and alarm and security systems.

  • Perform, when requested, security and heat checks.
  • Perform, where required, water testing.

Job Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 10 plus an additional vocational programme of up to one year or completion of Grade 11 or equivalent; and six months to one year’s work related experience.
  • Requires performing minor maintenance and servicing of mechanical, electrical or plumbing services.
  • Requires ability to use equipment; i.e., lawnmower, hedge trimmer, weed-eater, wet/dry vacuum, scrub machine, carpet cleaning machine, snow blower, germicidal cleaners and strippers, ladders, hand tools, etc.
  • Requires knowledge and compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (W.H.M.I.S.).
  • Requires familiarity with Board and school policies and procedures; i.e., property rental, emergency situations, fire, etc.
  • Requires effective communication skills to cooperatively work with Board staff, students, parents and the general public.
