The Community Standards Peace Officers are responsible to carry out daily duties and responsibilities of the Community Standards Peace Officer Unit, which provides investigation and enforcement services to the general public, industry and City Departments. All of this contributes to a safer Edmonton.

What will you do?

  • Deliver city wide Peace Officer and bylaw enforcement services as appointed
  • Conduct detailed investigations relating to public inquiries and officer initiated complaints and concerns
  • Interview and obtain statements from complainants, witnesses and defendants
  • Gather and prepare evidence from a variety of sources
  • Determine appropriate enforcement action; seek voluntary compliance or issue warnings or violation tickets
  • Be deployed as a resource to meet operational and special event requirements Support Capital City Clean-Up, Transportation Services, City Hall, Churchill Square, Vehicle for Hire, business and community league initiatives, unsecured load enforcement and Traffic enforcement strategies
  • Conduct moving vehicle traffic stops in adherence to Section policy and the Provincial guidelines regarding the use of Emergency Vehicles for enforcing moving violations under the Traffic Safety Act
  • Establish and maintain accurate paper and electronic records and files
  • Prepare letters, reports and court documents; present evidence in court
  • Conduct mobile patrols to ensure adherence with legislation you are appointed to enforce
  • Act as a positive ambassador for the City of Edmonton
  • Other duties as assigned or required

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 and completion of a recognized Diploma related to Law Enforcement, Security or Criminology
  • A minimum 3 years of strong customer service experience is required
  • A minimum 1 year of diverse law enforcement experience is required, including security, bylaw enforcement, provincial law enforcement or a related area
  • Must possess or be able to obtain the Provincial Community Peace Officer I designation with completion of the Community Peace Officer Induction Program - CPOIP, as well as a Bylaw officer appointment
  • Must be able to obtain or have successfully completed the Physical Abilities Readiness Evaluation (P.A.R.E.) within 4 minutes and 45 seconds (4:45)

Assets:

  • Professional knowledge of the Community Peace Officer Area, provincial requirements and standards
  • Knowledge of City of Edmonton policies and procedures, law and the provincial Community Peace Officer Program
  • Knowledge of operational and tactical planning
  • Knowledge of MOVES, APIS, CPIC, Corporate Registries and other programs
  • Experience in conducting moving violation enforcement and uniformed enforcement, commercial vehicle inspection and enforcement
  • Completion of PSES accredited training in: Control Tactics, or verbal de-escalation

Skills required for success:

  • Ability to work in physically demanding and sometimes dangerous environments
  • Must be able to work independently on confidential and complex issues
  • Knowledge and practical application of dealing with difficult persons; strong analytical, problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must possess strong presentation and public speaking skills
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
  • Strong team player with the ability to contribute to a high performing team
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, SAP and Google Suite
  • A proven ability to work well within a unionized workforce

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Shift work requirements -Evening and weekend availability is required. Must be able to work a variety of shifts.
