The Spiritual Care Provider works collaboratively within the inter-professional team to enhance quality of life through psycho-socio-spiritual therapeutic approaches to care. Working within the approach to care which embraces person-centered care, the Spiritual Care Provider provides psychological, emotional, social and spiritual support to patients, families and caregivers/significant others by performing holistic assessment and intervention.
Enhancing and facilitating the spiritual health of patients and their families as they mobilize spiritual health resources available to them for well-being, given the current circumstances and transitions in their lives. The Spiritual Care Provider supports patients and families as they prepare for end of life by enabling meaningful spiritual health experiences that strengthen personal dignity, values and identity. The Spiritual Care Provider engages people of all beliefs, respecting and offering compassion for diverse belief systems and worldviews.
Skills & Qualifications Required
- Bachelor's degree in Spiritual Studies, Religion, Psychology, or a related field is required
- Master’s degree is preferred
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the relevant discipline is required, ideally within a clinical or healthcare setting
- Registration with the appropriate professional college is preferred
- Completion of training courses offered by the Canadian Association of Spiritual Care is considered an asset
- Additional certification in Thanatology, Grief and Loss, Bereavement, or a related area is an asset.
Position Responsibilities Clinical Care for Patients and Families
- Psychological, emotional, social and spiritual support to patients at end of life and their family. This could include support on topics such as death and dying, existential meaning and purpose, spiritual distress, legacy work, culture, self-esteem, dignity, relationships, communication, spiritual well-being and grief and loss.
- Provide comprehensive spiritual health assessments and develop appropriate spiritual health care plans.
- Initiate empathic spiritual health support and interventions that help to mobilize spiritual resources to prepare for end of life.
- Ensure opportunities for appropriate rituals and ceremonies are provided in line with the beliefs of patients and/or families.
- Other skills include conflict management and problem-solving skills where issues may be sensitive.
- Facilitate connection with the patient’s faith group, when requested.
- Ensure accurate documentation is completed.
Inter-Professional Teams
- Participate in consultations with inter-professional teams that ensure spiritual health perspectives are included in the comprehensive care plans for the patient.
- Respond to referrals and involve other health professionals as required to enhance quality of care.
- Provide spiritual health support to staff especially during difficult times with patients and when other stressful healthcare work environment demands are causing moral distress.
Education, Research and Quality Improvement
- Promote education about current understandings of spiritual health for patients and their families.
- Deliver educational sessions to staff on topics related to spiritual care.
- Support and be involved in public education about spiritual care, where possible.
- Develop and engage in research activities related to spiritual care topics within Providence Care.
- Contribute to Providence Care’s quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing quality of life and care.
- Support additional educational efforts within Providence Care related to spiritual care.
Professional Collaboration
- Collaborate with community-based faith group leaders when possible to enrich the spiritual health of patients and their families.
- Work with Volunteer Services to support involvement of volunteers in appropriate ways with spiritual health activities.
- Collaborate with other Spiritual Health professionals in the Kingston area to share knowledge and best practices.
