about the role:
We are presently looking for Full-Time, Permanent Medical Laboratory/Medical Device Reprocessing Technician to join the Sherbourne Health Family Health Team (SH FHT) to provide primary care to clients at Sherbourne Health. Our Lab/MDR Technicians are key members of the interdisciplinary care team and work to their full scope of practice providing phlebotomy, specimen collection and medical device reprocessing within a primary care and community health services setting. The Lab/MDR Technician will have exiting opportunity in leading the quality management activities of a community-based MDR program.

Responsibilities and Tasks:
Phlebotomy & Specimen Handling
- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection.
- Label, secure, and prepare specimens for external laboratory transport.
- Receive, log, and verify incoming specimens.
Diagnostic Testing
- Conduct in-house diagnostic procedures, including:
- Electrocardiograms (ECGs)
- Vitals and BP True
- Point-of-care testing (e.g., glucose, urinalysis)
- Record and report test results accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
Medical Device Reprocessing
- Clean and decontaminate reusable medical and surgical instruments.
- Sterilize instruments using autoclaves and other approved methods.
- Reassemble and inspect instruments for functionality and completeness.
- Package and distribute sterilized instruments to clinical areas.
Quality Management & Equipment Oversight
- Monitor and maintain laboratory and reprocessing equipment.
- Perform routine quality assurance checks and document results.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards.
- Track inventory and restock laboratory and sterilization supplies as needed.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members.
- Provide direct service to clients referred by SHC providers.
- Maintain clear and professional communication with clinical staff.
To thrive in this role, you’ll need
education/experience:
- Current CSLMS or MLPAO Certification, or similar equivalent in training/experience
- OAHPP: Reprocessing in Community Health Care Settings Course or completion within 6 months of hire
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- 1 to 3 years demonstrated experience in a fast-paced, client-facing clinical setting.
- Experience working with at least one of Sherbourne Health’s priority populations, particularly 2SLGBTQ communities, a strong asset
skills and abilities:
- Understand the social determinants of health and their impact on newcomer and migrant communities, homeless or underhoused individuals and members of 2SLGBTQ communities.
- Experience/interest in working with communities facing barriers to accessing health care due to poverty, social isolation, homelessness, homophobia/transphobia, racism, classism, mental health and/or substance use challenges.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Solid interpersonal skills
- Effective organizational, critical-thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and communication skills.
- Experience and comfort working with an electronic medical record (EMR)
- Comfortable using Remote Interpretation Ontario (RIO) phone interpretation line with clients.
- Proven ability to problem solves effectively and independently.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Teams is an asset.
- Working knowledge of acts, legislation, and professional standards that govern medical laboratory technicians and medical device reprocessing practices including the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMIS), The Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), Medical Laboratory Technology Act (MLTA), Ontario Public Health Standards: Requirements for Programs, Services and Accountability (Standards), Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) practices for community health care settings and reprocessing, and Medical Devices Regulations.
- Ability to maintain professional practice regarding commitments to colleagues and clients, pertinent legislation, evidence-based standards of care and professional standards of practice.
- Ability to speak a second language (including French) is an asset.
