About the role
Position Purpose and Summary
Undergraduate Writing Coaches support students in all undergraduate programs with every stage of their writing process. They approach writing support through the lens of a coaching model rather than an instructional model. Their goal is to facilitate growth in self-awareness and metacognition so that students can reflect on and articulate their own writing process. Writing Coaches collaborate with one another and with faculty and learning professionals.
These positions are part-time, fixed term (August 18, 2025 to April 30, 2026).
Available Positions:
Three Undergraduate Writing Coach positions are available for the 2025–2026 academic year, each paid at $27/hour (plus vacation pay):
Position 1: 30 hours/week for 35 weeks
Position 2: 20 hours/week for 35 weeks
Position 3: 18 hours/week for 35 weeks
Key Areas of Accountability
- Coach students in individual sessions, with attention to various writing skills at various stages of the writing process, such as: prewriting, integrating research, drafting, revising, editing, and formatting
- Plan and facilitate group sessions and workshops based on specific learning outcomes and assignments, as needed; may include collaboration with other learning professionals
- Coordinate with course instructors regarding course-specific writing support, such as: course writing content and assignments, expectations, rubrics, and formative feedback
- Develop writing resources and other digital learning materials for writing across the disciplines

- Knowledge of the academic expectations in Canadian university, especially TWU
- Research-informed understanding of writing and writing pedagogy
- Knowledge of writing across different academic disciplines and genres
- Ability to scaffold learning and adjust scaffolding as needed
- Prepared to apply a coaching philosophy rather than a task-based approach
- Strong social-emotional and cultural intelligence
- Fluent in English and a clear communicator
- Proficient academic writer

Standards & Requirements
Education**:** Undergraduate degree required; Master’s degree preferred
Experience**:** Familiarity with the academic expectations and writing conventions of Canadian university; at least 1 year of experience teaching or tutoring at the university level; TWU alum (undergraduate degree) is an asset.
