The Senior Manager - Development Engineering is responsible for the operational planning of the Product Engineering function, with a focus on short-term tactical plans and a significant contribution to long-term product engineering roadmaps/strategies. The individual establishes tactical and operational plans for the team, ensures execution of processes, and influences improvement initiatives within and outside the job family. They have budget accountability and are responsible for the overall success of the product engineering function.

Responsibilities

  • Development Engineering Leadership: Oversee development engineering for the Canadian BU, ensuring smooth development from concept to production. Focus on short-term operational planning and execution while contributing to long-term strategic goals.
  • Operational Planning: Establish tactical goals for the team, manage resources effectively, and lead process improvements across the department to enhance efficiency and product quality.
  • Continuous Product Improvement: Drive initiatives to reduce costs, simplify designs, and implement product recommendations that align with business strategy.
  • Customer Feedback: Manage incoming customer-related product feedback from Salesforce and commercial teams. Lead teams to assess and implement necessary changes to improve product performance. Represent the company in key client meetings and site visits, fostering strong relationships and effectively addressing customer concerns.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate across functions to ensure all stakeholder needs are considered in defining and communicating the product engineering philosophy and capabilities at S&C.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Generate technical documentation, procedures, and reports to document processes, ensuring plans can be easily communicated and understood by various teams throughout the organization.
  • Functional Leadership: Provide strong leadership and direction to managers and senior contributors, setting clear performance expectations, and fostering a culture of accountability and excellence. Conduct regular performance assessments, provide constructive feedback, and facilitate career development opportunities to support individual growth and organizational succession planning.
  • Team Development and Expertise Enhancement: Establish and oversee a robust training and development framework, focusing on enhancing the technical skills, knowledge, and competencies of the development engineering team. Promote a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and collaboration, promoting cross-functional interactions and knowledge sharing among team members.
  • Budget Support: Manage the department budget, ensuring accuracy and appropriate resource allocation to maximize ROI and achieve departmental strategies and objectives.
  • Compliance: Understand and comply with all applicable Company policies and rules

We Are Looking For An Individual Who Has

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in product engineering, including 3+ years of leadership experience.
  • P.Eng License is required.
  • Sound knowledge of medium voltage equipment or similar product offerings, along with the needs and trends of the industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of product lifecycles, manufacturing processes, and industry trends within electrical manufacturing.
  • Great project management skills with the ability to lead projects and product implementations that span multiple teams. Project Management certification is an asset.
  • Sound leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and direct a diverse team of engineers.
  • Sound business sense and analytical skills with the ability to use and analyze data to drive informed decisions, solve complex problems, and drive learning.
  • Well-rounded communication skills (written, verbal, listening, and presentation); able to liaise with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, from senior leaders to support staff, and present compellingly to achieve buy-in from leaders and team members.
  • Critical and lateral thinking skills with the ability to analyze complex engineering challenges, identify innovative solutions and approach problems from multiple perspectives.
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions, ability to balance innovation with caution and ensure compliance while driving business success
  • Foster a culture of efficiency, problem-solving, and data-driven decision making to champion a lean mindset.
  • Great interpersonal skills to establish meaningful relationships built on mutual trust and respect, navigate and resolve conflict, moderate behaviours, and foster collaborative working relationships amongst a diverse audience.
  • Financial acumen and numerical ability to manage budgetary resources to maximum effectiveness.
  • Proven track record of understanding customer needs and delivering solutions that exceed expectations.
  • Experience working with certifying bodies and navigating certification processes as well as proven success in delivering certified products that meet required specifications.
  • Capable of embracing diversity and equity to ensure they contribute to a respectful and inclusive workplace.

Travel Requirement Up to 25% of the time, including international travel as needed for business purposes.

Physical Effort Normal or frequent minor physical effort is required for the day-to-day activity in the workplace. May involve standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs and lifting/moving/using objects or equipment up to 20lbs
