What can you expect from this position?

As the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety, reporting to the Associate Director, Airport Health & Safety, you will be instrumental in ensuring a robust and compliant occupational health and safety framework across the GTAA. This role is central to developing, monitoring, and continuously improving our Occupational Health & Safety Management System, ensuring it clearly documents how the GTAA fulfills its legislative obligations under the Canada Labour Code Part II and Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. You will be a key advisor, leader, and data analyst, driving safety initiatives, managing critical training programs, and overseeing WSIB claims, all while fostering a proactive safety culture within a complex, dynamic environment.

As Manager, Occupational Health and Safety, you will:

  • Develop, monitor, and continually improve the GTAA’s Occupational Health & Safety Management System, ensuring strict legislative compliance (Canada Labour Code Part II, Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations), and maintain/communicate safety metrics to all levels of leadership.
  • Conduct hazard/risk assessments, review corrective actions for safety concerns, and participate in regulatory inspections and investigations, providing compliance assistance as applicable.
  • Develop and facilitate comprehensive Health, Safety & Security Training curriculums for GTAA employees, OHS Committees, leaders, RAIC holders, and Security teams (including CASAP).
  • Establish and manage all OHS incident data (near-miss, injury, employee concerns), ensuring data capture and availability, and produce comprehensive OHS reports and analytics for Senior Leadership to determine policy and risk management priorities.
  • Develop, implement, and manage auditing/monitoring functions for OHSMS and legislative compliance, analyzing data to develop recommendations for hazard mitigation and future prevention.
  • Oversee the WSIB claims management process, acting as the GTAA lead for third-party representation, and tracking/reporting performance, costs, and budget implications to internal stakeholders.
  • Act as a key advisor to ensure functioning and compliant Workplace Health & Safety and Policy Health & Safety Committees, supporting business units in hazard mitigation, developing corporate safety protocols, and ensuring all relevant units are informed of legislative changes.
  • Commit to building diverse, multi-skilled teams by driving strategic clarity, fostering innovation, providing coaching and development through meaningful feedback, and executing flawlessly to cultivate a positive, healthy, and safe work environment with a strong personal commitment to Health & Safety.

This is the role for you, if you have:

  • Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related discipline.

  • A Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC) Designation, would be an asset.

  • 5 years’ experience in occupational health and safety focused position.

  • 3 years’ leadership experience, preferably managing direct reports, managing union and management relations.

  • Experience in occupational health and safety in airports or other transportation related environment preferred

  • Knowledge of Federal Occupational Health and Safety Legislation (Canada Labour Code Part II and Canada Occupational Health & Safety Regulations) and Provincial Occupational Health & Safety Legislation (Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act).

  • Ability to obtain and retain a Transportation Security Clearance.
