Position: Science Store & Snack Lab Team Member
Reports to: Manager, Science Store

Our Science for All strategy is to revitalize Science World with a substantial capital plan to replace critical infrastructure, enhance the visitor experience and develop new content across all our channels under the themes of Regeneration of the Planet, Human Health, and Inclusion. Our plan is to ensure that people throughout British Columbia, especially under-represented communities, have access to high quality, informal STEAM learning. Through our onsite, online and outreach programs, Science World seeks to spark curiosity and wonder in STEAM and support development of talent across communities in the province.

Position Description:
We are looking for adaptable and energetic team members interested in entering the retail industry. Under the direction of the Manager, Science Store or the on-duty keyholder, this position will provide a friendly and responsive visitor experience in Science World’s retail spaces, including the Snack Lab and the Science Store, which generate essential funds to support our charitable mission of Science for All. Ideal candidates have previous retail or customer service experience, are self-motivated, can work independently and are team-oriented with the ability to task-switch.
This position offers 10-20 hours per week generally made up of 5- to 8-hour shifts. Candidates must be able to commit to a minimum availability of 64 hours per month, with at least one workday on the weekend. Science World is open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs, and may include special events on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Responsibilities:
- Confer with Science Store Manager or the on-duty keyholder at the beginning of your shift to review set-up and shift requirements to ensure our retail spaces are operated efficiently and opened / closed on time
- Provide customers with friendly, responsive service in our retail spaces, including:
- greeting and assisting visitors with product selection by gaining and applying strong product knowledge
- performing proficient and accurate operation of our sales cash register and point of sale (POS) system
- preparing, selling and cleaning up food and beverage offerings
- Ensure the accuracy and efficiency of all daily cash and card transactions, including end of day reconciliation
- Assist with receiving stock, shelving, displays, promotions, and merchandising of our retail spaces
- Reply in a timely manner to emails, shifts available, complete timesheets accurately, etc.
- Resolve or escalate any customer concerns in a timely and professional manner
- Maintain tidiness and cleanliness in our retail spaces by completing hourly, weekly, and monthly tasks
- Utilize tools and resources to facilitate learning in Science World by performing product demonstrations to visitors
- Perform administrative duties as needed and assist in the smooth operation of all ancillary services
- Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World
- Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role
Experience & Abilities

Experience in sales, customer service, retail or tourism considered an asset. Minimum high school diploma preferred

Strong customer service and verbal communication skills. Must be able to relate to / handle visitors on various levels

Must have a polished and professional appearance and manner

Flexible and able to work in a busy / changing environment
-
Self-motivated and team-oriented with the ability to task-switch

Ability to take initiative, troubleshoot and problem solve in a timely manner
-
Able to stand for minimum of 5 hours and lift to 10 kg to assist in receiving shipments

Must be available to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, statutory holidays and school breaks. Minimum availability of 64 hours per month is required, with at least one workday on the weekend.
This is a unionized position represented by CUPE 1004. The compensation rate is $20.41/hour.
After successfully completing probation, the successful candidate(s) will be eligible to join the Voluntary RRSP/TFSA Plan and receive paid time off (sick, wellness days).
