What you’ll do
Lead, headquartered at the Edmonds office in Burnaby. We have been growing our teams to support an increase in the number of large projects and are hiring an additional Engineering Team Lead who will manage a team of P&C Engineers, technologists, and consultants to deliver on BC Hydro’s large, complex projects, primarily related to Power Generating facilities.
* You’ll use your business insight, project execution knowledge, critical thinking, organizational awareness, and leadership skills as you coach your team on their projects and assist with resolution of issues. Your resource planning skills, hiring, and training of new staff. You will review the work of your team and provide guidance where required. You will provide feedback and development opportunities to your team members, including formal and informal performance discussions and documentation. You will review and approve expenditures for your team and ensure compliance with policies.
* You’ll be a role model for safety, ensuring safety activities are completed and team members can perform their work safely, both in the office and in a field environment. You’ll ensure that your team fulfills all regulatory compliance requirements for their work and their role.
* You will contribute to the success of the Division, the Engineering organization, and other groups at BC Hydro, through involvement in broader leadership activities, metric development and reporting, planning, and business initiatives. You will travel to other parts of BC, including remote locations, and may occasionally travel outside of the province/country.
Specific Duties:
* Leads the P&C Team in Generation Stations Electrical and P&C Engineering Division, providing Engineering design services and support within the Protection and Control engineering discipline.
* Manages the technical and operational performance of the P&C Team to meet objectives that support BC Hydro’s mission, vision and priorities.
* Manages resources to deliver standard, non-standard, and highly complex designs as Professional of Record and as BC Hydro Owner’s Engineer for Capital projects and programs. Tasks include recruitment of technical staff, recruitment of augmentation staff, and technical development.
* Manages the resource demand within the team using internal and external resources in a cost-effective manner.
* As part of the Division Leadership Team, creates strategic training and development options; manages performance expectations; develops training plans – all to develop and maintain appropriate levels of expertise and competencies.
* Works collaboratively with Transmission P&C and Telecom, Stations Maintenance P&C, Quality Management, Project Delivery, Program and Contract Management, Operations, and Asset Planning to ensure the Capital Plan is delivered.
* Supports the implementation of strategic BC Hydro, Engineering Design, and Division initiatives such as the successful application of Safety by Design, implementation of the Professional Governance Act, Resource Planning, and Mandatory Reliability Standards practices.
* Champion of safety, both public and worker, when considering designs and work processes.
* Provide leadership in determining appropriate courses of action; work with Specialist Engineers and Principal Engineers to provide technical advice with respect to the solutions required for project and team related issues.
What you bring
* Bachelor’s degree or higher education in Electrical Engineering discipline recognized by Canadian universities.
* Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).
* A minimum of 10 years relevant experience, including performing engineering work on projects, similar in nature to large utility infrastructure projects. Experience related to Power Generation projects is preferred.
* Experience supervising or leading a team, preferably through direct experience on projects similar in nature to the work done by this team.
* Demonstrated understanding of the design engineering process (including drafting, signing and sealing, issuing drawings for construction, retaining design documents, etc.) and contract management process.
* Management experience is considered an asset, strong leadership experience will be considered.
* Experience with design and/or management of Generation Stations P&C Assets.
* Experience working with Engineering Service Providers.
