About The Team The International family includes the International Partnerships and Trade (IPT), International Finance and Economic Security (IFES) and Economic Crime and Security (ECAS) Director-led Groups.
This role is in the Global Economics Team. We are a team of analysts that works at the heart of International Group to provide analysis and economic policy advice on key global issues, prospects, and risks, and on their implications for the UK economy and policy priorities.
The Team Comprises Two Branches
- The Global Prospects and Advanced Economies (GPAE) branch, which leads on: HMT’s assessment of the global economy; and analysis on major advanced economies, including Europe, the US, Japan, Canada and Australia, including comparisons to the UK.
- The Emerging Markets (EM) branch, which has responsibility for economic analysis on emerging markets, including China, Russia, Turkey, the MENA Region, SE Asia and Latin America, and leads on a range of cross-cutting EM-focused global economic issues.
The team works flexibly and collaboratively to fashion high quality analysis and advice on a diverse and exciting range of policy areas and issues. About The Job In this role, you will:
- Analysis of Emerging Markets – Lead on HMT’s economic analysis for a geographic portfolio including the MENA, Central, South and Southeast Asia regions working closely with FCDO Posts. Analyse the economic developments in these regions and raise awareness of the implications for the UK and global economy. Produce in-depth country analysis based on current priorities and contribute to GE’s regular analytical products.
- International energy markets – Monitoring international oil and gas markets and informing ministers and senior officials of significant events with economic implications. Conduct analysis to support policy teams on the economic impact of decisions impacting these markets (e.g. sanctions policy). Lead on scoping and undertaking pieces of research/analysis to improve the team’s understanding of international energy markets. Support HMT’s crisis response efforts where they pertain to international energy markets (e.g. Middle East).
- IMF programs and OECD economic surveys – Lead on producing recommendations to inform the UK’s position at the IMF Board on key country programmes (including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ukraine), working closely with FCDO and IMF UKDel. Lead on HMG comments on regular IMF and OECD country reporting to inform UK interventions at IMF and OECD board meetings.
- Fragmentation – Act as the Secretariat for the HMT chaired X-HMG working group on fragmentation. Lead for HMT on relevant items contributing to the deliverables of the working group.
About You The successful candidate will be able to:
- Bring together individuals from a range of teams to deliver shared pieces of economic analysis.
- Use verbal and written communication tools to succinctly explain complex concepts to a non-expert audience.
- Identify developments and risks that can have an impact on their work and develop a plan for how to proceed.
