Position Summary :
St. Mary's Regional Cardiac Care Centre provides first-class surgical care to more than 900 patients every year. The cardiac surgery department includes two state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Operating Rooms, and an 9-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). As a member of the critical care team, the CVICU Registered Nurse coordinates, provides and evaluates patient care in accordance with the job description and applicable standards of practice.
Responsibilities:
- Prioritize nursing care for assigned patients based on assessment data and identified needs.
- Monitor, interpret, and evaluate patient specific data including assessment findings and results from laboratory and/or diagnostic testing. Adjusts care within designated parameters and seeks input from physician or nurse practitioner as required.
- Performs therapeutic/diagnostic procedures based on nursing standards, clinical best practices and hospital protocols/policies.
- Consult and coordinate care with health care team members. Collaborates with other health professionals to develop and revise treatment plans base on identified needs and assessment data.
- Communicate accurately and effectively with patient and his/her family members as well as interdisciplinary team members. Advocates for the needs of the patient.
- Document concisely, accurately and completely in a timely manner.
- Documents medical history, assessment findings, treatment plans, interventions, outcomes and plan revisions.
Position Requirements:
- BScN or equivalent
- Registered, in good standing, with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Current ACLS
- Demonstrate current knowledge of cardiac and respiratory arrest procedures
- Demonstrated proficiency in working with patients, families, peers and multidisciplinary health care teams
- Have excellent problem solving and communication skills, both written and verbal
- Must have strong leadership ability, organizational skills and commitment to professional development
- Ability to perform well in high stress situations
- Excellent attendance record required
Preferred Requirements:
- Recent experience in Cardiac Surgical Nursing
- Demonstrated knowledge of external pacemakers and chest tube management
Preference will be given to applicants with the following additional qualifications:
- Critical Care Certification
- Recent experience and current knowledge of assessment and management of the critically ill cardiac surgery adult patient
- Demonstrated expertise in physical assessment, ECG interpretation, hemodynamic monitoring and management of ventilated patients
