AHS’ Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, is a full-service pediatric quaternary care hospital. It is associated with the University of Alberta where multidisciplinary health program students are trained, and health research is facilitated. It is the only specialized healthcare facility for infants, children and youth in central and northern Alberta, and has among the highest inpatient and acute ambulatory service volumes of any children’s hospital in Canada. The Health Care Aid (HCA) will report to the manager of the Stollery Surge Capacity Inpatient Float Pool providing year-round support to the Stollery Inpatient Units including medicine, cardiology, hematology, oncology, surgery, and surge capacity. The Stollery accepts patients from birth to 18 years of age. This role will support a variety of patients requiring inpatient beds. In collaboration with patients, families, and multidisciplinary health team members, the HCA is responsible for delivering personal care by supporting activities of daily living, assisting with assessments and procedures, providing comfort measures, and documenting care in the patient record. Other duties include: portering, delivering specimens, maintaining inventory and ordering supplies, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and monitoring unit tidiness. The HCA plays a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care, whose actions reflect the shared mission, vision and values of AHS, and adhere to Stollery’s policies, guidelines, and procedures. Description:
As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team providing personal assistance including supporting activities of daily living and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this position you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities assisting nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs, assisting with organized activities or programs and observing and reporting on a patient's mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under a regulated health professional you will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/health-care-aides/confirmation/. Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Must have active directory status on the “Alberta Health Care Aide Directory” at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/
Physical requirements include long periods of standing, walking, and includes crouching, lifting up to 50lbs, patient transfers, and the ability to reach over the shoulder. Work occurs in a fast-paced environment. The role requires provision of constant care.
Basic Cardiac Life Support- Health Care Provider (BCLS- HCP) certification must be current (annual recertification required) and recognized by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Committed to family-centered care and a desire to work with children in an acute care environment is required. Good communication, time management and organizational skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates with recent acute care experience in pediatrics. Preference will be given to candidates with previous childcare experience and/or education.
