The role. We are seeking a full-time, permanent Rail Operations Technician to join our Production Department. Chemical unloading and rail car shunting plays a vital role at MPR, ensuring the safe and efficient unloading of chemicals for the production department. This position is also responsible for managing the movement of boxcars within the warehouse and switching yard. This position works 12 hour shifts of 4 days on followed by 4 days off.
Role And Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe work environment, responding to concerns in a responsive, and professional manner
- Ability to follow & abide by all safety precautions, government regulations and company policies and procedures related to the safe operation of the department
- Railyard and warehouse walkthroughs, verifying car numbers, completing visual railcar inspections, sufficient brakes checks, ensuring railcars are safe for movements
- Completion of daily paperwork & logs including railyard inventory, switch lists, daily log sheets, work orders, shift start sheets, safety sheets, railcar inspection reports, and daily chemical inventory
- Communication with warehouse operator to verify full cars, movements in and out of the warehouse and determining daily switchlist
- Snow removal from around man doors, railway overhead door access points, chemical contaminants, railway switches, crossings and tracks
- Switch and sort inbound boxcars in the railyard and warehouse to designated track
- Switch and sort full chemical railcars to appropriate track outside Chemical Preparation
- Light rail maintenance as well as track inspections
- Hooking/unhooking of Talc, 93% Sulfuric Acid, 50% Sodium Chlorate, 50% Caustic Soda, and Methanol as required
- Unloading of Talc, 93% Sulfuric Acid, 50% Sodium Chlorate, 50% Caustic Soda, and Methanol as required
- Verify chemical inventories are correct, ensure all chemical cars are received, signed off and emailed to the Rail Operations Lead
- Additional duties as required
Qualifications And Experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate or post-secondary education in a Chemical field would be considered an asset
- Railcar Mover Operator and Track Inspections Level ll would be an asset
- Train conductor/engineer experience or rail maintenance experience would be an asset, but not mandatory
- Proven safety conscious individual
- Strong team player, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work with diverse groups
- General understanding of regulations and workforce legalities
- Ability to lift and carry 50-75lbs for short distances
- Strong time management, organizational and decision making skills
- Able to work in all weather conditions (+/- 40 degrees)
- Self-driven, innovative and safety conscious individual
- Excellent problem solving, troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Enjoy working with tools, equipment, instruments and machinery
- Fork truck, skid steer or farm/heavy equipment operation experience is considered an asset
- Google Suite of Applications and Microsoft Excel experience is considered an asset
