Hit the road to a rewarding part-time career in Campbell River! We're seeking adaptable and community-focused Transit Drivers to join our spare board, playing a vital role in keeping our community connected.

Compensation, Schedule & Training:

  • Schedule: This is a part-time, spare board position. As a driver, you will be scheduled on an as-needed basis to cover various shifts, which may include mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays. Flexibility and availability are key for this role.

  • Training: Successful candidates will complete a 2-week paid training program at a rate of $25.00 per hour.

  • Wage: We offer a graduated tier system based on hours worked:

    • First 240 hours: 90% of the full rate, equivalent to $29.84 per hour.
    • 240 – 480 hours: 94% of the full rate, equivalent to $31.16 per hour.
    • After 480 hours: Full rate of $33.16 per hour.
  • Union: This position is part of the Unifor union.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • A valid Class 1 or 2Q (with Air Brake endorsement) driver's license.

  • Driver's abstract with no more than 5 demerit points and a demonstrated record of safe and responsible driving over the past 5 years.

  • Preferred: At least 1 year of professional driving experience (e.g., school bus or other public transport). Recent graduates of a transportation school will be considered.

  • Significant skills dealing effectively with the public, including demonstrated skills in conflict resolution, problem solving, and sound decision-making in positions providing customer service.

  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to communicate effectively with the traveling public and to report on incidents involving safety and/or service.

  • Willingness to participate in a comprehensive recruitment process which consists of interviews, trainability session, medical examination (as required for licensing), drug and alcohol screening, criminal record and reference checks.

  • Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSS) and Criminal Record Check is required.

  • Demonstrates a high level of professionalism, including commitment, patience, maturity, initiative, organization, punctuality, and reliability.

  • Possesses excellent driving skills and habits, with the ability to read maps and navigate routes effectively.

  • Exhibits strong communication, customer service, and conflict resolution skills to interact effectively with the public.

  • Capable of sound decision-making and problem-solving, particularly under stressful situations and in various weather conditions.

  • Ability to work various shifts, including statutory holidays.

Key Accountabilities:

Customer Transportation:

  • Safely transport passengers on assigned routes within Campbell River.
  • Transport customers in accordance with Municipal and Company policies, observing all traffic laws and safety rules and adhering to time schedules.
  • Courteously and professionally interact with customers.
  • Load mobility devices and escort customers to and from curbside as required.
  • Make general announcements to customers.
  • Collect correct fares and ensure valid passes are presented.
  • Empty fareboxes accurately at the end of your shift.
  • Drive safely and responsibly and be prepared for all road and traffic conditions.

Vehicle Inspection & Maintenance:

  • Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections, including checking fluid levels and general vehicle condition, to ensure the bus is in safe operating order.
  • Report any mechanical issues or vehicle deficiencies promptly.

Reporting and Emergency Procedures:

  • Complete a variety of vehicle and incident reports as required.
  • Carry out emergency/accident procedures when required.
  • Answer inquiries en route.
