Vice President Engineering – Darlington New Nuclear Project - SMR
The position has the leadership and management responsibility for large nuclear green field engineering projects. The Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) is a new Small Modular Reactor (SMR) from GE-Hitachi – BWRX-300. This position will report functionally to the VP, Candu Engineering and will part of the DNNP project management team with accountability and direct line report to the Candu Energy DNNP Project Director.
Location – Oshawa, ON
Your role within the team:
- Leadership and Oversight responsibility for Candu Energy Inc., a subsidiary of AtkinsRéalis, scope of work includes the design of the Balance of Plant under sub-contract to GE-Hitachi, and Architect Engineer and Site/Field Engineering for the entire Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) including Design Authority delegated from GE-Hitachi and the Candu Energy Chief Nuclear Engineer
- Leadership and management of Engineering activities for the DNNP project execution plan, including financial and schedule goals.
- Close collaboration and integration with GE-Hitachi, designer of the BWRX-300, and part of the integrated DNNP project delivery team led by Ontario Power Generation and including Aecon Nuclear and Kiewitt as construction partners.
- Manage the mentoring and coaching of staff, including development and execution of improvement plans, regular feedback, and succession planning. Must have strong people skills and demonstrated ability to lead with the highest standard of respect, ethics, and professionalism.
- Manage all department resources within project execution plan and financial targets.
- Responsible for collaborating and communicating with Project Partners with respect to Configuration Management requirements and all work Processes related to the Architect Engineer role for DNNP.
- This position requires full-time presence at the DNNP project office with regular visits to the project site. The project site is adjacent to the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station and the project office is located in Ontario Power Generation’s new corporate head office in Oshawa, ON.

The ideal candidate:
- Engineering or technical degree from a university of recognized standing, with a minimum of 10 years relevant experience.
- At least 5 years commercial nuclear power plant experience, to include the following:
- Serving in a leadership position at a commercial nuclear power plant site at department head level as a minimum, including demonstrated experience with improving engineering performance at a plant site.
- Achievement of engineering license (Canadian PEng or US PE).
- P.Eng registration with PEO or equivalent required.
- Demonstrated experience in leadership of a significant engineering department.
- Experience leading a Field Engineering function that supports efficient construction execution of a large, complex project.
- Experience leading a Site Engineering function with delegated authority to make design changes, and that integrates with the corporate design office, to support efficient and effective project execution.
- Experience with leadership of bargaining unit staff is a definite asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of INPO / WANO fundamentals and practices.
- Extensive experience in managing multi-million-dollar operating budgets.
- Plant management experience with exposure to day-to-day operations and oversight is an asset.
- Advanced knowledge and capabilities in executing initiatives which improve equipment reliability index, and the performance of O&M and capital projects for nuclear utilities is an asset.
- Hands on experience with efficiency reviews, monitoring and process improvement implementation resulting in improved equipment reliability and site performance.
- Highly developed capability in the area of costing, scheduling and the overall management of utility operational projects.
- Extensive exposure and experience with human performance tools for utilities to reduce the human error rate and subsequent lost generation and equipment damage.
- Comprehensive experience with the safety and operational aspects of commercial reactors.
- Experience with supervision, oversight and plant construction/maintenance resulting in increased efficiencies and the customization of specialized teams to enhance overall performance.
- Training experience to develop and execute increased process improvements through the development of programs to address the improvement of work control and efficiency practices.
- Highly developed safety background with extensive knowledge of safety practices and requirements in construction, and nuclear safety practices and requirements through site specific experience and operations focus.
