About the role

SmartICE is an award-winning technological innovation for the North. SmartICE offers a suite of climate change adaptation tools that integrate Indigenous and local knowledge of ice with advanced data acquisition, remote monitoring and satellite mapping for ice travel safety. Our community-based services provide invaluable, data-driven insights into ice thickness and local ice travel conditions, in near real-time.

SmartICE is inviting expressions of interest from individuals who are interested in joining the Board of Directors of SmartICE Monitoring & Information Inc. Individuals whose vision and values align with ours are ideal candidates. For further info, please visit our main page at www.smartice.org

The SmartICE Board is a governance board which governs the organization through a set of Strategic Directions, Governance Policies and By-laws.

The principal expectations of Board members include:

  • Support SmartICE’s mandate, values and strategic vision
  • Serve a three-year term (maximum 2 – three years’ terms)
  • Attend a minimum of 4 two-hour regular board meetings a year (typically virtual)
  • Attend special meetings as required
  • Be willing to assist with developing and overseeing strategic directions
  • Be willing to lend support in their area of expertise on an as-needed basis
  • Be willing to serve on the Executive and/or a subcommittee

We are seeking Directors who have any combination of desired skills, expertise or experience:

  • Experience with Indigenous northern culture, communities, networks and opportunities
  • Finance and accounting expertise with a CPA designation
  • Employment relations/human resources knowledge
  • Business development, communications, marketing, and public relations experience
  • Experience on not-for-profit, social enterprise
  • Technology or climate change adaptation
  • Strategic planning

Priority in the search process will be given to Indigenous beneficiaries and individuals with experience working and living in northern regions. Interest from all applicants is greatly appreciated; however, only those shortlisted based on our search criteria will be contacted. Following review of applications and subsequent interviews, new board members will be appointed by the SmartICE Board of Directors.
