About the role

Location & Eligibility

This is a remote opportunity open to candidates across Canada; however, each Regional Coordinator must reside within the ecoregion they will represent. There are six Regional Coordinator roles available, each corresponding to one of the following place-based Wildfire Knowledge Networks:

  • Cordillera Pacific Network
  • Taiga Network
  • Prairie Network
  • Boreal West Network
  • Boreal East Network
  • Atlantic Maritime Network

These networks are aligned with Canada’s terrestrial ecozones and fire regimes. To determine your eligibility and see which ecoregion you live in, please consult the ecoregion map.

If you live within one of these regions and are passionate about wildfire resilience and knowledge sharing, we encourage you to apply.

The Wildfire Resilience Consortium of Canada (WRCC) proposes a transformative approach to wildfire management that integrates Indigenous fire stewardship, and long-term land management, with place-based knowledge mobilization and acceleration of technology and innovation. By establishing national knowledge networks and focusing on Indigenous-led practices, the WRCC seeks to enhance wildfire resilience across Canada. This holistic and adaptive approach addresses the increasing wildfire threat due to climate change and evolving land use, promoting sustainable land management and honoring traditional ecological knowledge. The WRCC’s strategy is built on the principles of “engage, connect, and accelerate” to ensure a more resilient future for communities, structures, and landscapes.

Additional details about this position can be found at the Wildfire Knowledge Network virtual brochure.

Primary Focus:

The WRCC is establishing region specific knowledge networks in each of Canada’s unique terrestrial ecozones, where landscapes, fuel types, fire characteristics, human dimensions and infrastructure realities demand specific wildfire resilience strategies. These place-based networks will have a local coordinator and develop an understanding of the people, wildfire challenges and mitigation/management opportunities in their region and then work to shape, amplify and share local solutions. The Regional Coordinators are important agents of change, both knowledge translators (adult educators and outreach specialists) and knowledge brokers -Intermediaries that build collaboration and understanding. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of wildfire management and mitigation strategies in their region and have an existing network of Indigenous partners, community leaders and knowledge exchange organizations.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Initiate, plan and coordinate in person gatherings in your region that support knowledge exchange and align with the WRCC national knowledge mobilization strategy.
  • Elevate and amplify the work of existing wildfire management groups, with a special focus on Indigenous Fire Stewardship initiatives.
  • Establish a network of organizations and individuals working on wildfire resiliency in your region and support regular communication across your network.
  • Support and promote existing programs and actively connect people and ideas, in particular elevating Indigenous voices and wildfire groups.
  • Publish and circulate communications tools that start and advance key conversations in wildfire.
  • Maintain a WRCC templated webpage for your Network.
  • Attend quarterly meetings with all network coordinators and the Knowledge Mobilization Core.
  • Attend a yearly AGM with the wider WRCC.
  • Complete a WRCC templated annual report.
  • Collect and report out quarterly on standard KPIs (provided by the Knowledge Mobilization Core).
  • Work closely with other network coordinators and the Knowledge Mobilization Core to maximize efficiency and best practice sharing.

The statements provided above aim to outline the overall scope and complexity of the tasks expected from the individual in this role. They are not meant to encompass every responsibility, duty, or skill essential for the position.

  • $80,000 - $95,000 annually (commensurate with experience) plus benefits.
  • Opportunity for remote work, flexible location within your region of Canada . Full time.
  • As the WRCC is national in scope and because the Regional Coordinator will host many in-person events, frequent travel is required.
