About the role
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Construction Trainee position is offered through a specialized training stream under Civiconnect’s Youth Skills Studio (YSS) program. This program provides participants with essential technical and soft skills that are needed to start a career in skilled trades.
This hands-on training program is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience in construction.
Participants will work directly with one of our partner organizations while receiving on-the-job training from industry professionals. They will gain hands-on experience in residential construction by using tools and operating equipment, assisting with home-building tasks, reading and interpreting construction drawings, maintaining tools and materials, and following workplace health & safety protocols.
Through a combination of structured workshops and hands-on learning, this program serves as a stepping stone for individuals looking to launch a career in skilled trades and/or construction.
WAGE:$22/hour
HOURS OF WORK: 33.5 Hours/Week
PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: September 22nd – December 19th 2025

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Participate in mandatory technical and soft skills workshops to develop foundational trade knowledge and workplace competencies.
-
Assisting in site preparation, material handling, and basic construction operations under professional supervision.
-
Reading and interpreting construction drawings and site plans to support accurate work execution.
-
Operating basic construction tools and equipment, such as drills, saws, and compactors, safely and effectively.
-
Supporting framing, drywall installation, concrete work, flooring, insulation, roofing, window and door installation, painting, and other foundational construction tasks.
-
Maintaining a safe, clean, and organized job site in accordance with safety regulations.
Students will rotate through three core areas over the course of their placement, spending roughly one-third of their time in each of the following:

Participating in active construction projects on the build site to gain hands-on experience in skilled trades.
-
Assisting with Kitchen Salvage operations, including the safe removal and preparation of reusable materials.
-
Supporting store warehouse operations by organizing inventory, preparing products for sale, and helping with light construction-related tasks as needed.
WORKPLACE SAFETY & COLLABORATION:

Follow strict safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to workplace regulations.

Maintain a clean and organized work environment to ensure safety and efficiency.
-
Work closely with industry professionals to develop technical skills and problem-solving abilities.
-
Collaborate with team members to complete projects and meet production goals.
This program is an excellent opportunity to gain industry-relevant skills in a structured, supportive environment while working alongside experienced professionals. No prior experience is required, just a willingness to learn and a commitment to professional growth!

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Physical Demands:

Must be able to perform manual labour, including lifting, carrying, and moving materials or products.

Required to stand for extended periods, bend, kneel, and use hand tools or machinery regularly.
Environmental Conditions:

Work is conducted on a construction site and may involve both indoor and outdoor work. Employees may be exposed to varying weather conditions, dust, and noise.

Proper safety equipment, such as hard hats, steel-toed boots, ear protection, and gloves, will be provided and must be worn as required.
Health and Safety:
-
Participants must disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies, or mobility limitations to ensure proper accommodation and a safe working environment.

Regular health and safety briefings will be conducted to ensure awareness of potential risks and the measures in place to mitigate them.
PROGRAMS / SOFTWARE USED:

Microsoft Office Suite for record-keeping and reporting

PayWorks for clocking in and out, tracking vacation, payroll, and storing essential employee records.

The YSS is an integrated learning environment, and no prior experience is required, though familiarity with basic hand tools or general labour is an asset.

Must be enrolled in part-time or full-time studies at a Canadian post-secondary institution with a co-op or internship

Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
