About the role
POSITION OVERVIEW
Employees working shrink wrap will be part of a small 4-person team responsible for fulfilling shrink wrap orders to meet deadlines. The team will be led by the Lead Shrink Wrap who will guide members in efficiency and productivity.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate shrink wrap machine, ensuring trays of eggs are wrapped properly based on customer requirements.
- Pack flats of eggs into appropriate shipping containers or onto skids.
- Communicate verbally with the production team on order progress and requirements.
- Communicate verbally with the production team regarding problems with eggs or packaging.
- Pack and palletize loose egg flats onto skids.
- Scan eggs and discard broken and/or cracked eggs.
- Inspect packaging for general appearance and code dates.
- Prepare materials and boxes for packing.
- Count boxes, baskets, and skids.
- Follow established HACCP (food safety), biosecurity, and health and safety procedures.
- Ensure all food safety issues are communicated with the Lead Shrink Wrap.
- Operate mobile equipment (pallet jacks) to transport skids from line to cooler.
- Keep machine parts and work area clean, tidy, and free from hazards.
- Assist co-workers where and when needed.
- Inform the Lead Shrink Wrap of any conditions that could affect food safety.
- Live by the company’s mission, vision, and values.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with all levels of staff.
- Other duties as assigned by the Production Supervisor or Plant Manager.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English and basic math skills. Grade 12 education preferred.
- Prior general experience working successfully on a team environment and independently.
- Prior experience operating mobile equipment considered an asset.
- Must be able to communicate and work well with others as part of a team, demonstrating politeness, respect, and courtesy in communication and daily interactions.
- Must be able to provide clear, concise general instructions for team effectiveness and productivity.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time and keep pace in a fast, production-line environment.
CONFIDENTIALITY
The incumbent will be working in a proprietary environment. Policies and procedures are shared between Golden Valley Foods Ltd. and the L.H. Gray & Son group of companies. Discussion of these with non-Golden Valley Foods and L.H. Gray affiliated employees is strictly forbidden. Some specific policies can be shared with Fresh Start as Golden Valley Foods owners.
HEALTH, SAFETY, AND ENVIRONMENTAL
- Work in compliance with divisional and legislative health, safety, and environmental procedures.
- Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout-tagout methods.
- Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts.
- Report defect in any equipment or protective device.
- Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for the assigned tasks.
- Participate in all required health, safety, and environmental training.
- Report any accidents/incidents to supervisor.
- Assist in investigating accidents/incidents.
- Refrain from engaging in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running, or rough and boisterous conduct.
- Report workplace hazards to a leader or the health and safety committee.

Sparks Egg Inc. is a leading supplier of farm fresh eggs to Calgary, Edmonton and surrounding areas. Our Grading Station handles approximately 50% of Alberta's egg production, processing eggs from over 70 Alberta egg producers.
Our facility for production, grading, packaging, marketing and storage is approximately 37,000 square feet. Processing and packaging is handled by state-of-the-art grading equipment at speeds of 250 to 400 cases - 7500 to 9000 dozen eggs - per hour, this amounts to more than one million eggs per day!
