Assistant Controller
About the role
Our client, a customs brokerage operation is looking to hire an Assistant Controller to manage all aspects of the accounting operation, eventually becoming the Controller.
As an Assistant Controller, you'll support the Chief Financial Officer by managing accounting activities, preparing financial statements, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations. The Assistant Controller will be the leader of the accounting team, responsible for maintaining, managing, and analyzing financial statements, payroll, tax compliance issues, and more.
Key Responsibilities :
Financial Reporting:
- Complete month-end and year-end closing procedures.
- Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements (income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements).
- Prepare and analyze other financial information as necessary/requested.
Accounting Operations:
- Oversee and manage the day-to-day financial operations of the company, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and billing.
- Manages the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable staff, while assisting the Billing Manager.
- Maintain the general ledger and subledgers.
- Process journal entries and reconcile accounts.
- Complete monthly account reconciliations, including bank reconciliations.
- Assist with the HR function.
Auditing:
- Assist with preparations for the annual external review of financial statements.
- Liaise with external auditors.
Tax Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all relevant tax laws and regulations.
- Assist with preparation and submission of HST/GST returns, payroll tax etc.
Skills and Qualifications :
- Knowledge/experience with QuickBooks.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Self-motivated and self-directed.
- Experience with financial software and systems.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of tax laws and regulations.
- Experience with budgeting and forecasting.
- Some knowledge of Customs Brokerage operations an asset but not required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related discipline or an equivalent combination of related experience and education.
- Minimum 5+ years accounting experience in a senior accounting or financial management role.
