Duties:
Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean supports the goals and objectives of the Faculty of Education with a particular emphasis on academic planning and implementation, providing leadership in matters related to academic quality, budget development and monitoring, and management functions that facilitate successful working relationships with faculty, staff, communities, and university administration. The Associate Dean assists the Dean in the development of new initiatives, and supports program chairs in the implementation of these initiatives.
Student and program success is fostered through the support provided by the Associate Dean. This involves working with other institutional areas including Student Affairs by initiating new strategies for student engagement and managing student concerns and appeals.
Current responsibilities and initiatives include:
- Work in support of the Dean and as acting Dean when required, including attending Provost Council and President's Council;
- Provide oversight for academic program quality and delivery;
- Support the Dean in program review and program accreditation work;
- Provide budget support to the Dean and Faculty as needed;
- Provide operational oversight for CIEL, including providing strategic direction, employee support and development, and budget oversight;
- Undertake institution-wide initiatives as developed by the Provost in consultation with the Dean;
- May supervise faculty within the Faculty of Education as determined in consultation with the Dean;
- Manage student issues that come to the Dean's office;
- Chair Faculty search committees as needed;
- Represent the Dean, and Faculty, as required;
- Initiate new strategies for student engagement;
- Initiate and provide support for viable cost recovery activity;
- Provide leadership and assistance with scholarly activity within the Faculty.
Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have an earned Doctorate within a relevant discipline (i.e. teacher education, educational leadership, curriculum, early childhood education, special education or adult education), and a minimum of five years exemplary teaching experience along with a history of scholarly activity and thesis supervision.
Extensive knowledge of Faculty of Education programs and program evaluations along with academic leadership experience, a solid understanding of university governance, and experience working in a unionized environment.
- Ability to create and maintain a positive, learning-centered work environment;
- Demonstrated team building/maintenance skills;
- Sensitivity to and ability to promote diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives;
- Demonstrated competence with budget development, monitoring and expenditure control;
- Demonstrated expertise in program development and/or curriculum within a post-secondary context;
- Experience with policies, procedures, governance and systems that facilitate smooth faculty operations;
- Demonstrated ability to support a variety of educational development initiatives and activities in a post-secondary context;
- Excellent written and oral presentation skills;
- Demonstrated ability to engage in and support a variety of research and creative activities at the undergraduate, graduate and faculty level;
- Demonstrated willingness to engage with and learn about an evolving portfolio of post-secondary programs within a decanal area;
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous perspectives and decolonization within a post-secondary context;
- Understanding of change management within an evolving post-secondary context.
Required Qualifications:
- Eligibility for teacher certification within British Columbia;
- Experience using learning management systems and understanding of LMS and other technologies that support teaching and learning (video conferencing, portfolio tools, video assignments, etc);
- Experience in a post-secondary teaching and learning centre.
