About the Position

Reporting to the Associate Director, Communications and Marketing, the Communications Officer (Communications & Marketing) is responsible for writing compelling stories, executing goal-driven paid social media campaigns, supporting branding initiatives and compiling reports that measure the impact of communications and marketing efforts.

The Communications Officer (Communications & Marketing) will have the following responsibilities:

  • Write stories and news articles that translate complex research into accessible, engaging and impact-focused content.
  • Identify and pursue new digital advertising opportunities that align with Faculty goals
  • Develop annual reports (writing, compiling visual assets) that are engaging and include content that highlights key achievements and initiatives.
  • Build and manage email campaigns using the iModules platform.
  • Work closely with a wide range of audiences including faculty, students, alumni donors, senior leadership and industry/community collaborators
  • Design and implement digital marketing campaigns that promote research priorities, in collaboration with the Office of Research, Innovation and Partnerships in Engineering.
  • Liaise with central marketing to ensure alignment with Brighter World branding standards.
  • Assist with video production, including storyboarding and on-site direction of freelancers and on-camera subjects; coordinate photography sessions with freelance professionals.
  • Occasionally help update and maintain content on the Faculty of Engineering website.
  • Adapt content for various platforms and audiences, with strong writing skills for web, social media and other digital formats.
  • Contribute to engagement and awareness campaigns and events.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Faculty of Engineering programs, initiatives and strategic priorities.

Job Summary

Responsible for the planning, development and implementation of all communications to enhance the overall profile of a department, group, or academic unit. Completes analysis and reporting for all communication vehicles within the unit.

Key Purpose and Functions

  • Completes annual needs assessments and writes business plans which includes the development of communication and strategic plans and objectives.
  • Conducts in-depth interviews of project stakeholders and participants requiring awareness of the nuances of the answers received before proceeding to the next stage in the interview.
  • Facilitates meetings with project stakeholders and participants.
  • Develops project specific budgets for review and approval by management.
  • Develops plans regarding statistical reporting of communication methods including setting timelines and recommending key performance indicators.
  • Writes annual reports with quantitative data, key performance indicators, recommendations, and budgets for review and approval by management.
  • Writes content of communication materials.
  • Develops and maintains social media platforms as identified in the business plan.
  • Provides recommendations on software and hardware needed to ensure efficient implementation of the plan, including associated budget requirements.
  • Oversees the design and maintenance of the program website.
  • Monitors and analyzes performance of interactive websites and recommends changes. Develops and maintains relationships with key stakeholders on campus.
  • Liaises with internal and external colleagues and collaborators. Sources vendors and obtains pricing information.
  • Provides training to other staff on communication platforms.
  • Provides advice to staff regarding e-communication software and best practices. Attends and participates in a variety of meetings.
  • Remains current with frequent developments in social media platforms and trends in the communication field.

Supervision

  • Ongoing responsibility for supervising up to 9 casual employees at any one time.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, or related field.
  • Requires 3 years of relevant experience.

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Superior writing skills, preferably with experience in writing about complex research topics for a general audience.
  • High degree of tact, diplomacy, and professonalism.

  • Proven ability in relationship development and management.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • A strategic and creative mindset.
  • Deep knowledge of marketing, branding and strategic communications.
  • Excellent knowledge and application of marketing strategy and familiarity with marketing tools.
  • Excellent analytical skills, including ability to amalgamate data from multiple sources (e.g. Google Analytics, Facebook Ad Manager, etc.) to evaluate success.
  • Great attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to coordinate, review, and edit all web content to ensure the quality of content.
  • Ability to proactively contribute ideas, seek input, and share information.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects, prioritize content, and manage time autonomously.
  • Ability to coordinate and write the department's annual report and accomplishments.
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office, Adobe Suites and Canva.

The successful candidate must also have professional experience and proficiency in the following:

  • Using social media for relationship building, outreach, and promotion.
  • Developing content for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
  • Marketing and communications for a post-secondary institution.
  • Working on website development with a variety of content management systems, including WordPress.
  • Understanding and creating online content with a focus on the user experience.
  • Liaising with media, advertising and professional print and web designers.
  • Responding to media inquiries through various mediums.
  • Participating on committees related to marketing, communications, and branding within the organization.
