Job Overview:

The primary role of the Clinical Nurse Educator is to facilitate a learning environment where evidence-based knowledge is translated via multi-modal education to staff with the aim of optimizing patients' outcomes and experiences. This includes the design and delivery of educational plans and activities to support improving staff's knowledge, skills and competencies and, by working in collaboration with others (CNSs, NPs, CPLs, and Service Managers) provide support for staff's ongoing professional development.

Accountabilities:

1. Education:

  • Assesses learning needs of individual nurses (both existing and new hires), unit/program nurses, and nursing staff across the Centre (for defined corporate initiatives).
  • Develops education plans containing goals, objectives, resources and evaluation activities.
  • Provides leadership in designing and delivering education arising from new or changing clinical practices.
  • Develops education plans for nursing staff that includes annual reviews, re-certifications, just-in-time education and required learning resulting from ongoing competency requirements and changes in nursing practice.
  • Collaborates with Clinical Education & Practice Development Specialist, CNSs, CPLs and Service Managers to identify opportunities for integration of interprofessional learning assessments and education plans.
  • Maintains learning attendance records and monitors the implementation of educational plans and relate activities (e.g. teach-back/return demonstrations).
  • Provides timely and constructive feedback to nursing staff on their learning and application to their practice competence.
  • Promotes learner responsibility/accountability for their own learning and professional development.
  • Works in partnership with Service Managers and CNSs to develop Learning Plans for remediation activities for nursing staff.
  • Supports, mentors and coaches nursing staff and nursing students (as appropriate), in achieving their learning goals and objectives.

2. Consultation/Collaboration:

  • Evaluates effectiveness of educational plans and related activities inviting feedback from staff and specific stakeholders (e.g. CNSs, CPLs, and Service Managers).
  • Identifies opportunities to influence and augment a positive learning environment by bringing forward recommendations with draft learning plans and related strategies for consideration.
  • Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating corporate and other educational initiatives including those addressing policy/procedures.
  • Participates in relevant Centre's committees and other working groups to support a clinical education perspective and articulate other educational activities that are underway or being proposed.
  • Collaborates with the Clinical Education & Practice Development Specialist on nursing student placement opportunities and any arising opportunities and issues.
  • Collaborates with Service Managers in interviewing, hiring and contributing to the evaluation of nursing staff when appropriate (e.g. progress with orientation checklists).

3. Research and Scholarship:

  • Maintains and continually augments skills and competencies in leading practices in education and knowledge translation.
  • Develops external relationships and coalitions to share resources, knowledge and expertise in educational approaches and design.
  • In partnership with CNSs and other stakeholders, supports the development of educational materials for nurses and the interprofessional team members. Note: not pt/family….that is for CNSs.
  • Supports and participates in the implementation of evidence based practice (best practice guidelines and other forms of evidence) and quality improvement initiatives with Professional Practice, units/programs and corporately.
  • Supports staff nurses and team members to engage in meaningful learning opportunities for nursing students.
  • Supports, mentors and coaches undergraduate nursing students during their clinical practicums at the Centre as relevant to education plans and initiatives that are being conducted.
  • Supports the Nursing Professional Standards and Issues Committee (NPSIC) through membership and leadership on specific initiatives pertaining to clinical education.

5. Work History and Attendance:

  • Good performance work history and attendance record.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in nursing or education
  • Undergraduate: Bachelors of Science in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse with current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario and in good standing
  • Current/previous experience as a Clinical Nurse Educator in a health care organization
  • Experience and demonstrated success as a clinical nurse (3-5 years' experience)
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clinical educational leadership and mentoring to staff
  • Additional course work, workshops and experience in principles and methodologies of adult education
  • Additional course work, workshops and experience in a specialty focus that supports the patient population at the Centre
  • Experience facilitating learning from an evidence-based practice perspective
  • Certifications that complement the patient population at the Centre
  • Cross-appointment(s) to academic institutions
  • Specialized clinical practice that supports patient populations at the Centre
  • Current/previous experience as a Clinical Nurse Educator in a health care organization similar to the Centre
  • Experience in quality improvement methodologies and participation in research
