Graphic Designer
Part-Time, Contract (up to 5 months)
Queen’s Square Location
Reporting to the Director, Programming and Promotions, the Graphic Designer designs and executes creative concepts and design solutions that align with CPL’s brand identity and corporate messaging. Designs and concepts will be strategically tailored to various communications mediums and channels, both internally and externally. Under the direction of the Director, Programming and Promotions, the Graphic Designer is responsible for conceptualizing and leading in the development of visually innovative materials that support internal/external communications (e.g. onsite, print and digital). The Graphic Designer works directly with staff to receive project content and information, interpret the needs of the project, and provide creative solutions that are strategically aligned with business priorities and objectives, while often working within strict time and budget constraints. Assists in the creation of graphic design for communication materials in print and digital platforms for internal and external communications. Supports organizational strategic goals, communications and assist in the activation of campaigns utilizing digital marketing and print media in the promotion of the services and programs of Cambridge Public Library.
What You’ll Do
Responsibility for program/service delivery (internal/external), coordination of staff
- Designs collateral marketing and communication materials within existing brand guidelines to promote services/programs and public awareness campaigns across a variety of platforms and formats (e.g., print, digital). Provides quality control to projects to ensure brand consistency.
- Executes requests for creative designs (e.g., marketing collateral and promotions, signs, logos, templates and other formats as needed), seeing all projects through from concept, production, completion and delivery. Designs are tailored for success in specified channels. (e.g. presentations, web graphics, signage, project identifiers, brochures, templates, animated/motion graphics and other as needed, seeing all projects through from concept, production, completion and delivery).
- Actively participates as part of project teams in conceptualizing, planning and execution of CPL brands, sub-brands, initiatives, and key promotional campaigns that require design services.
- Identifies, encourages and brainstorms proactive creative design concepts for all CPL departments.
- Provides multimedia support (e.g., videography, photography, graphic design) to help engage employees and the public while communicating messages aligned with CPL programs and services.
- Prepares layouts and uses a variety of media methods/techniques to effectively display/present and convey messages to target audience (e.g., colour, type, illustration, photography, print).
- Prepares and selects artwork per specifications, and edits and updates existing artwork. Uploads images and logos to the digital asset management platform (DAM). Ensures artwork has copyright clearance/is free from copyright restrictions.
- Formats text/artwork per standards (e.g., Canadian Press, AODA, Web Content Accessibility).
- Prepares printing specifications and files for printers. Works with printers and section staff to ensure specifications are met. Checks proofs for accuracy and adherence to production standards.
- Works with departments to delivery products and services.
- Prepares video storyboarding and oversees and leads small video productions.
- Assists the Marketing and Communications Specialist with the creation of original social media content.
- Works with internal technology software and hardware.
- Demonstrates knowledge of social media platforms and required design specs for each platform.
- Plans/prioritizes work according to priorities and timeframes established by the Marketing and Communications Specialist and approved by the Director, Programming and Promotions. Also works with pre-designed corporate branding and assists in the creation of supplemental creative/collateral materials.
Project management (planning, producing, implementation, monitoring, reporting)
- Presents design work at various stages to the Marketing and Communications Specialist and clients/teams for review and to the Director for final approval as appropriate. Provides regular project updates and knows when to escalate and communication issues and concerns.
- Assists Marketing and Communications team with design support including re-sizing and re-purposing media assets.
- Manages, prioritizes and executes multiple simultaneous and often ad-hoc requests.
Business planning, develop policies and enterprise management
- Regularly audits competitors and municipal peers and stays current with industry trends, developments, and technological advances.
- Brings forward emerging technologies and methods for design.
Requirement to adapt, modify, procedures, programs or inform policy development
- Participates in research and review of new communication technology and makes recommendations to management and department staff.
- Aids in the development of procedures and/or strategies that are directly related to the Marketing and Communications team and its functions. Assists with the organization and management of files to ensure the Marketing and Communications team maximizes operational effectiveness.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
To be qualified for and successful in the role, you should have:
Education:
- Required - Post-secondary diploma/degree (or in process of) in 2- 3-year Graphic Design program at the college level or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience. Considerable, professional and related experience in graphic design field is required.
Experience and other requirements:
- Required – Prior related experience in service industry: 1-2 years of work-related experience, specifically creating graphic designs for a variety of media in accordance with a brand style guide
- Required – Demonstrated proficiency with task-specific software (Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite with a focus on InDesign, Photo Editor, Illustrator and Photoshop).
- Required – Expert knowledge in a PC environment, using laser printers and comprehensive photo acquisition, image enhancement/manipulation and colour correction using Photoshop. Knowledge and skill in all aspects of graphic design and technical requirements (from concept to completion of print/web/digital pieces) and printing production processes
- Required – Demonstrated complete understanding of colour theory, spaces (RGB, CMYK, HEX, Pantone) and relationships, typographic terms, perspective and space relationships, page composition and grid structures, print production process and knowledge of production techniques.
- Required – Ability to write letters and memos, print specifications, and details of requisition forms. Ability to calculate cost information and job status information. Ability to proofread and edit materials.
- Preferred – Demonstrated experience in customer service
- Required – Valid Driver’s license and access to vehicle
- Preferred – Experience and working knowledge of the editorial publication process
- Preferred – in Adobe Creative Suite
- Preferred – Strong video and editing skills and experience in the video production process (scripting, filming and editing)
