About This Position About the Department of Economics, Justice & Policy Studies

The Department of Economics, Justice & Policy Studies, Faculty of Arts at Mount Royal University invites applications for a tenure track which will commence July 1, 2022, subject to final budgetary approval, at the Rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Criminal Justice.

The criminal justice program at MRU is Alberta’s only 4-year Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice (BACJ) program; it combines theory with real world experience to expand student understanding of the criminal justice field, criminology, law enforcement, community outreach and victim services.

The Department currently offers a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice (BACJ), and a Bachelor of Arts in Policy Studies, as well as minors in Political Science, Economics, International Business and Economics, and Finance and Economics.

About The Role The TikTok Study The study is titled: Exploring the intersectional complexities when social media is used to identify perpetrators of gender-based violence (the TikTok study). Click here to learn more.

We are seeking one student to assist us in a research project. It is a qualitative study that focuses on survivors of gender-based violence who have named their abusers online through social media platforms.

Your Role Includes

  • Assisting with participant recruitment.
  • Editing transcribed interview data. We prefer someone with experience using Google and AI-based platforms that help transcribe audio-recorded interviews.
  • We prefer someone with experience using TikTok and other social media platforms, as the study engages with content shared online.
  • You will have regular meetings with the research team including a training session. The team includes Dr. Leanna Ireland and Dr. D. Scharie Tavcer.
  • This work can be done virtually.

The Ideal Candidate Includes

  • This position is ideal for a senior Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, or Social Work student who is considering graduate school.
  • This student can approach this work with a trauma-informed and survivor-centered lens.
  • Please note that the role involves exposure to sensitive and potentially distressing content, including detailed accounts of gender-based violence.
  • Having strong trauma-informed skills are essential, particularly since the student will be engaging with survivors.

This Contract Includes

  • The work will begin in late June 2025, and continue through to the fall semester 2025. It might spill over in the winter 2026 semester if we have trouble recruiting enough participants.
  • It involves approximately 130 hours of work at a rate of $20 per hour. You will be asked to keep track of your hours and your employer will be Mount Royal University.
