About the role
Context
The mission of the McGill Office of Sustainability (MOOS) is to create a culture of sustainability at McGill. MOOS aims to identify, connect, and enhance efforts to incorporate principles of sustainability (ecological, social, and economic) into all areas of the University. We provide the institutional memory and knowledge, the network of partnerships, the framework for sustainability at McGill (Climate & Sustainability Strategy), and the seed funding (Sustainability Projects Fund) to facilitate the sustainability efforts of students, faculty, and staff.
Among its five long-term commitments, McGill aims to become zero-waste by 2035 by attaining a diversion rate of 90 percent, based on the internationally recognized standard. To achieve this target, the McGill community will have to make changes to campus waste infrastructure and supply chains, while also bolstering education and engagement initiatives.

Duties
- Coordinate and facilitate the activities for Zero-Waste Ambassador volunteers (who conduct waste audits, class presentations, tabling outreach, among other activities)
- Conduct in-person and virtual outreach to educate the McGill community about waste reduction and waste-sorting practices (via class presentations, tabling, and events)
- Organize and help conduct waste audits on campus with the Zero-Waste Ambassadors
- Participate in the Zero-Waste Task Force (provide updates on engagement and student perspectives to this cross-campus group of stakeholders)
- Identify key locations for waste education interventions on McGill’s campuses
- Others, as they may arise
Qualifications
- Be a current McGill student (students from all faculties are invited to apply)
- Reliable with strong organization and time management skills
- Strong team player and people skills
- Eager to learn about and advocate for sustainability and waste reduction; creative and enthusiastic
- Excellent oral and written communication
- Ability to keep track of, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks independently
- Interest in sustainability on campus
Assets
- Experience managing volunteers
- Public speaking skills
- Event coordination experience
- Connections with student sustainability groups on campus
- Understanding of basic sustainability concepts
- Fluency in French
Hours: 6-10 hours per week, from July 21, 2025 through July 21, 2026 with the possibility to extend.
Remuneration: $16.66 per hour + 4% vacation pay and compensation for legal holidays
