About the Labrador Friendship Centre

The Labrador Friendship Centre is an organization that provides critical services to urban Indigenous populations. The not-for-profit charitable organization is located in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland & Labrador, and prides itself on acknowledging the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Innu of Nitassinan, the Inuit of Nunatsiavut, and the Inuit of NunatuKavut in Labrador. Position Overview

We are seeking an Indigenous Justice Navigator to join our team at the Labrador Friendship Centre. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting Indigenous people to understand the justice system and supports available to help them when experiencing legal issues. The ideal candidate has completed a post-secondary program in social sciences or a justice-related field, has experience working with Indigenous populations, and has an in-depth understanding of laws relating to common legal issues faced by Indigenous people.

This position is based on 35 hours per week, and while most work can be completed within the standard 8:00am-4:00pm workday, some evenings and weekends may be required.

Key Responsibilities

· Assist clients with understanding and prioritizing legal issues.

· Assist clients with completing and filing legal documents.

· Provide general legal information and referrals to legal and non-legal resources and supports.

· Develop relationships and engage with legal professionals working with clients to ensure adequate collaboration to address client justice needs.

· Maintain and up-to-date knowledge and inventory of reliable online information and resources as well as in community supports and services.

· Monitor changes to laws in areas relating to common legal issues experienced by vulnerable populations in Labrador.

· Develop relationships and collaborate with like-minded organizations.

· Develop and follow a program workplan and program budget.

· Track program statistics and prepare monthly reports.

· Participate in relevant professional development as required.

· Attend relevant meetings, conferences, and workshops as required.

· Other related duties as required.

Qualifications

· Post-secondary education in social sciences or justice-related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Experience working with and providing support to Indigenous populations.

· Knowledge of trauma-informed care.

· Knowledge of criminal and legal systems and processes.

Key Attributes & Assets

· Previous experience working directly in community programming.

· Comprehensive knowledge of Labrador’s Indigenous people and culture.

· Strong knowledge of local legal resources and supports.

· Excellent crisis intervention skills and coping methods

· Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.

· Strong oral and verbal communication skills.

· Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications.

· Ability to work effectively in a team setting as well as independently.

· Membership to an Indigenous group or having Indigenous ancestry is an asset.

· Ability to speak Inuktitut or Innu-Aimen is an asset.
