About The Library Housed in the Riddell Library and Learning Centre, the University Library is an integral part of the MRU experience. The services, facilities, programming and expertise available in the Library support innovative teaching, learning, and scholarship across campus.

The Library includes the Archives and Special Collections, and specialized and technology-enriched teaching and learning spaces, including information literacy classrooms, a Maker Studio, audio production rooms and a range of visualization, simulation and immersive spaces. The Library team consists of approximately 60 employees. The Library values a healthy inclusive workplace, encourages a culture of innovation and teamwork and provides support for professional development.

Trico Changemakers Studio

The Trico Changemakers Studio brings together community organizations and students immersed in Calgary’s social innovation milieu to work alongside each other and collaborate on new innovative ideas that address social and/or environmental challenges. The space serves as a community co-working space, social R&D space, and studio space for MRU students enrolled in any faculty on campus working on social innovation and changemaking challenges.

About The Role The Public Services Assistant, Maker Studio provides one-to-one instruction, assisting and teaching Library users in the safe and effective use of a range of Maker Studio tools, technology and other learning technologies. Additionally, this role is responsible for teaching and assisting Library users (students, staff, and faculty) both in-person at the Service Desk as well as virtually with a range of research-related tasks, skills, and knowledge in support of their academic work and their information needs.

This is a permanent full time position with 35 hours per week on-campus, working Monday to Friday. Responsibilities Maker Studio Support and Training:

  • Provide formal and informal training for students, staff, and faculty in the use of the Library’s Maker Studio specialized software / technology, tools, and equipment and in the use of other Library technology as assigned.
  • Assist in the development and updating of handouts, how-to guides and training materials.
  • Assist with research and implementation of Maker Studio related tools, technologies, and equipment.
  • Ensure Maker Studio tools, technologies, and equipment are functioning optimally, including maintaining a directory of warranty and replacement schedules.
  • Maintain the Maker Studio facility to ensure it remains in clean, safe working order, maintaining health and safety records (including reporting, safe disposal of materials, MSDS).

Assist Library Users

  • Perform reference interviews to respond to, identify, assess, and clarify information needs of Library users.
  • Provide one-to-one instruction and assistance to Library users in virtual and physical environments, to help them effectively access and use print and electronic resources to meet their information needs.
  • Support Library users to access and use a range of information resources, databases, subject areas, and in searching and evaluation skills.
  • Work as part of a team to provide efficient, timely information and referrals to Library users.
  • Process materials and equipment, including course reserves materials, to make items available to Library users.

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree complemented by experience working in a library (academic is an asset) or educational environment.
  • Experience working with and providing support and training with several of the following tools, technologies, and equipment: 3D printing, 3D modeling, carving, sewing, cutting, drawing, electronics, robotics and micro computing, a variety of digital and analog fabrication tools, etc.
  • Experience in a maker studio or maker space environment.

Preferred

  • Library Information Technology (LIT) diploma would be a strong asset.

Salary: $55,982.00 - $70,841.00 per annum.
