About the role

Are you a seasoned Powerline Technician with a passion for sharing your knowledge and shaping the future of the trade? We're looking for a dedicated and skilled professional to join our team as a Powerline Technician Instructor. In this exciting role, you'll leverage your hands-on experience in installing and maintaining electrical and communications lines and related transmission and distribution equipment, operating digger derrick and bucket trucks, and applying strong mechanical skills to train and inspire the next generation of line workers. The role of the Instructor will be to:

  • Facilitate learning to students and deliver theory and practical components of all courses outlined in Level I (Pre-Employment) of the Plan of Training of the Powerline Technician trade.
  • Incorporate their own teaching style to existing lesson plans while meeting the learning objectives of the course material.
  • Work with other faculty members to ensure a coordinated and consistent teaching approach to ensure the planned curriculum for each course is delivered.
  • Prepare and implement various instructional strategies, techniques, and learning modules using an approved curriculum to achieve specified learning outcomes.
  • Utilize and advocate for the use of technology to advance teaching and learning.
  • Establish student performance objectives and evaluation methods.
  • Administer various assessments.
  • Meet with students regularly to gauge and evaluate progress.
  • Set a professional example and communicate effectively at a level appropriate to the ability of students and provide an emotionally safe learning environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Maintain appropriate classroom management following college policies and procedures.
  • Identify and resolve problem areas in learning.
  • Provide academic advising to students.
  • Participate in professional development activities, maintain currency, and strive for excellence in instructional practices and the trade.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to accreditation activities to ensure the program is of the highest standard.
  • Instructors may also be required to prepare learner performance reports and prior learning assessments as required by the Department of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills as well as other related duties consistent with maintaining quality student-centered instruction.

Screening Criteria

  • Completion of Interprovincial Journeyperson Certification in Powerline Technician (Operating).
  • Minimum of six years combined apprenticeship training and recent related trade specific industry experience.

Assessment Criteria

  • Knowledge of powerline work concepts.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures in the powerline industry.
  • Proficiency with technology.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and engage students by using real-life examples to enhance understanding.
  • Organizational and time management skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills with an ability to consider and respond appropriately to the needs of students.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with other faculty and staff.
  • Ability to foster and deliver a positive student learning experience.
  • Professionalism.

  • Credentials obtained outside of Canada will require an evaluation to determine their Canadian educational equivalency. This evaluation must support the educational requirements for the position.
