Hours/Week: 25-31.25 Hours per week

The Fort McMurray Catholic Schools is looking for a full-time Educational Assistant, split between Elementary grades 1-6 for Literacy and ECS as an EA 4. Half of this position is assisting students who demonstrate significant academic delays and who require additional academic focus in literacy and numeracy interventions.
Qualifications:
- Educational Assistant Certificate AND/OR Bachelors Degree in Education, English, Linguistics or smilar is required
- Division Literacy Certification and the 2023/2024 refresher training preferred; if no applicants with both, then candidates with the 2023/2024 refresher training will be considered; if no applicants with the refresher training, then candidates with working experience in a Literacy position from 2024/2025 will be considred; if no candidates identified then must possess the required educational background for the 2025/2026 school year
o Successful candidate will be required to participate in ongoing literacy and numeracy training
Requirements:

Work on literacy, numeracy, and/or ELL approaches with individual students or small groups
-
Work collaboratively under guidance from the CST, the teacher(s) and any other member of the multidisciplinary team to support children with literacy and numeracy needs
-
Plan daily reading, writing or numeracy activities under the direction of teacher or CST
-
Adhere to the guidelines set out within reading programs (Fountas and Pinnell, Jolly Phonics, etc) and evaluate effectiveness of strategies being used
-
Follow any IPP/ISP strategies as directed by the teacher and CST
-
Able to communicate the reading level of students and give strategies for reading, writing, and word decoding to students and parents
-
Able to work with technology and implement iPads, Chromebooks, and SmartBoards, etc into daily intervention
-
Understanding of vocabulary topics within a unit to assist with pre-teaching concepts from the curriculum
-
Implement ELL approaches that may include vocabulary development, speaking english, reading and writing development
-
Implement daily record keeping for student literacy, numeracy, or ELL portfolio
-
Complete term progress checklists with teacher
-
Provides support to the general operation of the school
-
Communicate effectively with students using age appropriate positive reinforcements and/or school specific behaviour strategies
-
Support students’ growth in the areas of cognition, communication, physical and social development
-
Support and/or implement teacher directed programming
-
Work collaborative under guidance of teacher, CST and members of a multi-disciplinary team
-
Implement specialist (OT, PT, SLP, etc) strategies to achieve required goals
-
Implement behaviour management and educational strategies that facilitate student learning
-
Communicate effectively with students using age appropriate positive reinforcements and/or school specific behaviour strategies
-
Observe student behaviour with focus on achieving positive behavioural/educational outcomes and mitigate/prevent negative ones
-
Provide high level of structure to facilitate completion of required learning outcomes
-
Work and play at student’s physical level of their activities
-
Provide support in use of adaptive and learning technologies using a variety of devices and associated programs
-
Successfully implement the Positive Behaviour Plan(PBP), if required
-
Medical Procedures – such as Catheter, Tube feeding, Feeding and swallowing support, toileting, or diabetic monitoring may be required
-
Able to understand, implement and support modified curriculum
-
Able to work with and support students with Autism or complex medical needs
-
Physically handle and transfer students when unsafe
-
Physical ability to lift and move students
-
Provide school directed indoor and outdoor student supervision
Employee is expected to work with a variety of children who may exhibit behaviours related/associated with conduct, obsessive/compulsive, trauma and stress related, severe chronic depressive, feeding and/or eating disorders etc. Other behaviours related to ADHD, emotional/behavioural, learning and speech & language-related disabilities, etc may be encountered.
