The Town is seeking applications for the permanent full-time position of Custodian I. This position performs work to clean and maintain Town buildings to ensure facilities are clean and safe for public and staff use. The position may also be required to assist the Town’s parks and/or public works department in a general labourer capacity.
Examples of key work activities include: clean, sweep, mop, scrub, or vacuum building floors; service, clean and supply washrooms and change rooms; make adjustments and minor repairs to plumbing system; strip, seal, finish and polish wood floors as required; clean kitchen equipment; requisition and distribute supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties; set-up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables and chairs to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings; set up and remove barricades for special events; paint interior rooms, staging, and cabinets as required; and open and close facilities.
Required qualifications include:

Completion of Grade 12;

A minimum of one year’s experience in janitorial care or maintenance;

A valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a safe driving record;

Building Service Worker Certificate from accredited college or university considered an asset;
-
Experience in maintaining institutional buildings;
-
Knowledge of the cleaning methods, material, tools and equipment used in janitorial work;
-
Knowledge of routine building and equipment maintenance and minor repair tasks;
-
Knowledge of WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System);
-
Satisfactory Police Information Check.
Note: An equivalent combination of education, experience, and knowledge will be considered if deemed acceptable by the employer.
The successful candidate is customer service focused, demonstrates good communication skills and is physically capable of lifting heavy objects and performing general Labourer duties. They are also able to multi-task effectively, work independently with minimal supervision, and possess strong time management and problem-solving abilities, along with a keen attention to detail.
The terms and conditions of employment are covered by the CUPE Local 401 Collective Agreement. The rate of pay is $31.80/hr. Successful applicants will be expected to work 40 hours/week with shifts scheduled Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday, with the majority of the shifts being afternoons/evenings.
