About the role

Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Sterile Supply Processing Technician at the BC Cancer Research Centre’s Animal Resource Centre performs specific duties related to the decontaminating, checking, testing, assembling, packaging, wrapping and sterilizing of re-processable and reusable barrier facility products for immunocompromised mice including packs of surgical instruments prepared by technical personnel, in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures.

Duties/Accountabilities:

  1. Checks, cleans and decontaminates re-processable and reusable supplies and equipment in the barrier rodent facility, such as cages, cage racks, water bottles, water valves, cage enrichment, and carts. Sterilize packs of surgical instruments prepared by technical personnel.

  2. Operates ultra-sonic washer, mechanical washers and sterilizers, and participates in routine maintenance of the department’s equipment by cleaning, checking and testing equipment for functionality. Reports maintenance needs to Manager or designate.

  3. Sorts, inspects, and reassembles equipment and supplies according to written procedures.

  4. Wraps and labels equipment and supplies for sterilization according to written procedures.

  5. Fills orders for sterile supply processing, according to weekly task list and email requests.

  6. Maintains inventory levels of sterile and non-sterile supplies by restocking depleted supplies, and reprocessing outdated sterile items in the barrier rodent facility.

  7. Monitors supplies for wear, and maintains attrition logs to support when equipment requires replacement.

  8. Maintains accurate records to comply with quality assurance standards by performing duties such as reading, documenting, maintaining steam and biological indicators.

  9. Maintains cleanliness and tidiness of work area by disinfecting floors, countertops, shelves, tables and other designated areas, storing items in appropriate places

  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience

  • Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized sterile supply processing course, plus one year’s recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate and deal effectively with others.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
