Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. Our Bus Operations Support Services team is seeking a Technical Writer/Illustrator to review and/or develop technical documents and manuals (processes, procedures, reports, documentation, SOPs, communications, briefing notes, memos, (etc). in a variety of different mediums and formats, presents information in a medium with consistent voice to facilitate effective transfer and comprehension of the information in a clear and concise manner to the end user

What will I be doing?

  • Design, develop and maintain the department Sharepoint site and data portal based on industry best practices and standards. Leverage interactive technologies on the departmental website to blend text, graphics, photos, and videos.
  • Review, develop and/or update divisional related documentation, including policies, programs, procedures, standards, guidelines, investigation reports, technical reports, training material, safety plans, communications, bulletins, board safety reports, executive safety reports, briefing notes and memos, and creating presentation material as required.
  • Work with the operational team to produce learning and knowledge artefacts and detailed operating procedures.
  • Create detailed illustrations to accompany technical instructions for bus operator duties, including pre-trip procedures, equipment checks, and layouts.
  • Supports subject matter experts by researching and documenting the validity of content in safety documents under review; meeting with subject matter experts to identify specific content requiring validation; and updating documents with latest information as required; co-ordinate sign-off and finalization of documents
  • Manage and maintain the Document Control process with all groups within the Division, including designing, developing, and maintaining standardized templates, adhering to corporate branding, international standards and recognized best practices for production of technical documentation.
  • Revise, create and implement standard operating procedures, business process documentation and instructional manuals for the division
  • Manage and maintain the content on the Division's online intranet content.

  • Supports the business in administering programs and initiatives as part of the strategic plan by distributing information/communication, responding to related inquiries, collecting and recording receipt of documents/records
  • Collaborates with internal and external contacts as necessary to gather business requirements during the initiation, development, and implementation of assigned projects

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • Completion of a degree in writing, technical communications or a related discipline – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Proficient in Adobe Illustrator with a strong portfolio showcasing technical illustrations.
  • Familiarity with relevant software for graphic design and illustration.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to translate complex technical information into clear and concise visuals.
  • Demonstrated years of experience in communication/writing/journalism or related field.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Human Resources legislation (e.g., Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, etc.)
  • Organizational skills to work independently and prioritize daily requirements with limited supervision
