About the role

Working under the supervision of the Vehicle Systems Supervisor, the Vehicle Communications Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance and modification of all communication systems, and audio/video surveillance components on Transit vehicles including Handi-Transit vehicles.

As the Vehicle Communications Technician you will**:**

  • Install, diagnose and repair vehicle communication systems and components using manuals, wiring schematics, PC based diagnostics and circuit test equipment.
  • Install, diagnose and repair audio/video surveillance system(s).
  • Install additional electrical systems and components on buses and support vehicles.
  • Coordinate and perform special tests on bus equipment and prepare written and verbal reports on results.
  • Assist in the development and update of electrical system and communication repair procedures and specifications.
  • Train maintenance employees on vehicle communication systems when required.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the classification.

Your education and qualifications include:

  • High School graduation or GED or equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • A Certificate in Industrial Electrical Maintenance or Certificate in Industrial Electronics or Certificate in Electrical Applications including courses such as; ELEC-1000 DC and AC Fundamentals, Electric Motor Controls 1, or Electrical/Electronic Fundamentals or a related program of training and experience.

  • A Diploma in Communications Technology or Electronic and Network Technology from a recognized Community College is considered an asset

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with diagnosing electrical system faults using PC based diagnostics, wiring diagrams and circuit test equipment.

  • Experience in the installation and repair of fleet radio, video, DVR, AVL and Fare Collection systems is considered an asset.

  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively with minimum supervision.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees at all levels of the organization and liaise effectively with outside suppliers and manufactures.

  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to instruct and train employees in new procedures and techniques.

  • Ability to adhere to the requirements of Respectful Workplace Standard.

  • Ability to use computers at a basic level (MS Outlook, Excel, internal systems).

Conditions of employment:

  • Must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5F Manitoba Driver’s license in good standing and must successfully obtain a Class 2F license with Air Brake Endorsement within 2 months of hire (in house training).
  • Physically capable of performing the routine manual labour components of the position, which may include but are not limited to: heavy lifting (up to 100lbs), maneuvering within or around large equipment, exposure to extreme weather conditions, diesel exhaust fumes and chemical agents used in the mechanical field.
  • Must possess necessary hand and diagnostic tools to perform the duties of the position.
