About the role

The Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA) is a national profession-based health care association representing over 8000 chiropractors across Canada. The association works closely with the 10 provincial associations to promote the profession and build strong relationships with provincial and federal governments to ensure the growth and recognition of the profession in the healthcare system. Position Overview:

The  Accountant  is responsible for the management, preparation and administration of all financial activities of the organization. Reporting to the CEO, the role will focus on supporting all departments with maintaining and reporting accurate information on the financial progress of the Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA).

This role oversees all day-to-day finance and accounting operations, including financial services, planning, reporting, bookkeeping, and internal controls. It ensures robust accounting systems are in place to support effective financial management. The position works closely with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) — particularly the Director of Technology on membership revenue and reconciliation, and the Director of HR & Operations on payroll and budgeting. It also supports staff by providing guidance on financial procedures and developing best practices to enhance operations. In addition, the role serves as the primary liaison with the External Accounting Consultant and Firm, fostering a strong working relationship to ensure clarity, accuracy, and alignment of responsibilities. This includes understanding their scope of work as it relates to CCA’s financial operations and collaborating to ensure seamless integration of internal and external accounting functions.

Key Responsibilities:

Finance, Accounting, Budgeting and Reporting 70%

  • Develop and maintain an understanding of the financial operations within each department
  • Develop and oversee the effective communication of timely and accurate financial statements and reports that are appropriate for the users and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Work closely with Human Resources and Payroll to manage day-to-day and month-end close entries including revenue, payroll, prepaid expenses, and accrued liabilities
  • Review monthly results and implement monthly variance reporting budget with the leadership team and advise on improvement plans
  • Monitor the internal controls, financial policies and procedures of the organization
  • Prepare and administer of charitable donation tax receipts
  • Process of accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Manage the monthly preparation of corporate credit card statements and recording them in the GL.
  • Add new clients and vendors to the financial system for invoice and payment processing.
  • Process cheques and distribute for signatures
  • Review, post and reconcile, payroll and employee benefits
  • Process employee expense reimbursement claims and calculate year-end allowances and taxable benefits
  • Monitor daily bank transactions including EFT receipts and e-transfers for cash balance and any unusual items
  • Monitor the process of CRA payroll remittances through our payroll provider
  • Ensure the timely distribution of T4, RL1, T4A slips
  • Develop and maintain accounting documents and electronic files
  • Other duties as assigned

Relationship & Risk Management 20%

  • Build trusting relationships with staff, and internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Handle inquiries from CEO, ELT, managers, and staff relating to financial matters of programs/departments
  • Report to CEO on operational and productivity metrics, resource needs and opportunities for improvement
  • Monitor risk management policies and procedures to ensure that program and organizational risks are minimized
  • Advise the association on appropriate insurance coverage

External Accountant and Consulting Support 10%

Liaising and understanding the external accounting scope of work which includes the following:

  • Work closely with Human Resources and Payroll to manage day-to-day (and month-end close entries including revenue, payroll, prepaid expenses, and accrued liabilities
  • Manage the financial transactions including maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll
  • Prepare working papers, schedules, and other information for the interim and annual audit, and handle audit inquiries and the Board audit committee as necessary
  • Prepare reconciliations for balance sheet and other general ledger accounts including deferred revenue
  • Lead the month-end and year-end closing process
  • Ensure the organization is compliant with Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO) and accounting standards.
  • Manage the preparation of the organization’s year-end charitable tax return
  • Monitor, prepare and post corporate allocations
  • Prepare annual GST return
  • Establish guidelines for budget and forecast preparation and prepare the annual budget (in collaboration and with input from the ELT for their departmental budget) under direction from CEO

Qualifications & Relevant Skills

  • Minimum of one to two years’ progressive accounting experience
  • Experience in non-profit organizations preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance or related field with enrolment in CPA designation, with a preference of being in the final stages of completing the program
  • Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks desktop and online) and financial management systems
  • Proficient in recording and reconciling income from multiple payment gateways (e.g., Moneris, Stripe, Shopify) to bank records
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite, databases CRM such as Salesforce, Videoconferencing tools and software
  • Strong technical acumen using Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO) and GAAP
  • Ability to implement strong accounting processes and streamline inefficiencies
  • Significant experience with financial statement preparation and disclosure
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to think creatively in order to find new solutions.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage activities with varying priorities; ability to conform and adjust to shifting priorities and demands
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and professional communication with internal and external colleagues and stakeholders that demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and respect of confidentiality
  • Communication and presentation skills (written and verbal)
  • Association background is desirable but not required.

Hiring Range:  $75,000 to 80,000   commensurate with experience.
