Join our team of veterinary technicians: Animal Care Services (ACS) at SFU is committed to providing faculty, staff and students with high quality, cost-effective research and teaching animal resources. In addition to suitable housing facilities and animal husbandry services for animals used in biomedical research, ACS provides veterinary services, personnel training and expertise in common laboratory methodologies, anesthesia and surgical techniques for rodents, birds and fish. The ACS veterinary staff cares for all animals housed on campus, every day of the week, including holidays.

About the Role

The position provides research animal husbandry care. Responsible for daily health and welfare monitoring of all species under the responsibility of Animal Care Services. Duties include providing food and water, specific housing needs, reporting health concerns to the senior staff and veterinarian, providing medical treatments when prescribed, performing technical procedures and general housekeeping of all facilities. Occasionally required to assist in all areas of Animal Care Services (Animal Resource Center, Animal Care Facility, Alcan Aquatic building, satellite aquatic rooms in Biology and South Science building) as requested by the facility Manager to support daily operations.

Preference given to veterinary technicians with rodent handling experience, RLAT certification (Registered Laboratory Animal Technician), CALAS membership (Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science). The ideal candidate should have at least 2 years of experience working in a veterinary clinic and/or university animal research facility. The ideal candidate would have experience working in a containment level 2 setting and be proficient in various technical procedures required in animal base research studies including injections, blood collections, anesthesia, gavage etc.
