About the role

Skwah First Nation is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Summer Student Community Workers to support a variety of community-based programs and services. This is a full-time, short-term opportunity designed for Indigenous secondary school students who are eager to gain valuable work experience while contributing to the well-being of the Skwah community.

Under the supervision of department leads in Maintenance, Lands, Office Administration, and Health and Social Services, the successful candidates will take part in a range of projects that promote the preservation of our lands, support cultural programming, and enhance community operations. Students will be placed in areas aligned with their interests and abilities.

This is a great opportunity to build transferable skills, develop strong work habits, and take part in meaningful work that supports the values and vision of Skwah First Nation.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Office work including filing, archiving, word processing, scanning, shredding and other related office duties;
  • Maintenance and grounds keeping including cutting grass, weeding and facility maintenance, set up and take down and other maintenance functions;
  • Environmental and Hope Slough work to ensure restoration work; lands related functions;
  • Community summer events including supporting summer camps, summer sports and cultural activities and canoe events at the Band.
  • Social media and website.

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • A team player
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • For those working in the areas of maintenance and lands, ability to perform physical tasks
  • For those working in the office area, knowledge of computers and office functions.

Required Qualifications

  • Be a minimum of 15 during the work period
  • Have a Social Insurance Number
  • Be indigenous and preferably a Skwah First Nation member

Compensation The position offers a competitive wage of $20.00 per hour for 35 hours per week , with tax exemption for eligible candidates.

Working Hours and Schedule This is a full-time, temporary position with flexible hours.

Work schedules may vary depending on department needs.

Some evening and weekend work may be required to support events and activities.

Ability to Commute/Relocate

  • Work is based at: 615 Wellington Avenue, Chilliwack, BC V2P 2G2
  • Applicants must be able to reliably commute or plan to relocate before the start of the position (required).
