Job Summary:

The Lab Demonstrator, Bioinformatics is responsible for supporting the development of laboratory content and preparing, setting up, and delivering lab to students. This position delivers laboratory concepts and experimental guidance, supervises students as they carry out labs, assesses and marks lab assignments and examinations. In collaboration with the faculty, the laboratory demonstrators create materials to support students in the lab and the assessment of the learning outcomes. In addition, this position is responsible for ordering materials, and liaising with internal and external parties to facilitate smooth lab operations.

Job Description:

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Lab Delivery and Instructional Support:
  • Introduces students to lab concepts and reinforces connection between the experimental procedures and theoretical concepts covered in the lectures.
  • Demonstrates wet and dry laboratory techniques to students. Supports students carrying out practical exercises in the either dry or wet lab.
  • Trains students to operate technical laboratory equipment, handle chemicals and treat specimens.
  • Instructs students as they operate laboratory equipment as they practice laboratory techniques used in the field of Bioinformatics, such as protein purification, DNA extraction, DNA sequencing and electrophoresis.
  • Supervises students and reinforces safety protocols that are appropriate for the procedure used. Maintains safety of others in a lab environment.
  • Fields questions related to theory or interpretation of lab results.
  • Maintains office hours and scheduled appointments with students outside of lab hours.
  • Supervises long-term projects and experiments during and outside lab time.
  • Compares student work to prescribed laboratory learning outcomes.
  • Maintains student conduct in labs.
  • Connect students with student support services, as required.
  • Coordinates with Accessibility Services to ensure designated accommodations are met.
  1. Materials preparation and Lab set-up:

Materials and content

  • Writes and updates lab manuals, in collaboration with faculty.
  • Designs assessments such as lab exams, lab reports, lab assignments, etc. in collaboration with faculty.
  • Orders materials, software and programming related resources required for lab
  • Creates and updates lab supplementary materials in collaboration with faculty.
  • Sets up lab materials on educational platforms (e.g. Brightspace).

Lab Set-up and Maintenance

  • Ensures the laboratory space is abiding by all safety regulations
  • Setup lab rooms according to prep list created by Faculty and Laboratory Demonstrator.
  • Moves, maintains, and sterilizes technical equipment as needed (e.g., microscopes, models, hot plates, centrifuges, hot water baths, incubators, DNA sequencer such as Sanger sequencer (seqstudio) and oxford nanopore).
  • DNA extraction, Preparation of sequencing libraries, sequencing DNA using nanopore sequencer
  • Operates Mac lab and unix computer cluster
  1. Student Assessments:
  • Assesses laboratory techniques and field work, and assesses laboratory submissions.
  • Invigilates and marks any laboratory assessment (e.g., lab exam, assignments, lab reports, oral presentations, etc.). If applicable set-ups exams in the laboratory.
  • Communicates results of lab assessments or post assessment reviews in a timely (1 week) and confidential manner, in person, by email or video conference.
  • Maintains academic integrity in lab assessments.
  • Maintains and stores records of grades.
  1. Administrative and Purchasing:
  • Prepares and submits, for program coordinator approval, purchase requisitions of supplies, equipment and material for laboratory.
  • Monitors and balances annual operating budget relative to requisitions.
  • Offer input on program budget allocations and enhancements.
  • Collaborates and participates in department/team meetings. Liaises with other groups on and off campus to facilitate resources and relevant supports.
  1. Performs other related duties and/or ad hoc projects, as required.

Qualifications Required:

Education & Experience

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s of Science or Applied Science, where a majority of course work is in biology and/or computer science. Preference for bioinformatics or computational biology.
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience as a lab demonstrator, lab assistant, teaching assistant or acceptable equivalent, preferably in a post-secondary environment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Considerable knowledge of the course content, procedures, techniques and methodologies involved in bioinformatics or computational biology.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Worksafe and WHMIS regulations.
  • Proficiency in scripting in statistical computing programs such as R or Python.
  • Proficiency working with Linux clusters
  • Proficiency with MacOS

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, instructors, staff and students.
  • Ability to advise and direct laboratory aides and student employees.
  • Ability to demonstrate the use of different equipment and techniques to students.
  • Ability to interpret and apply departmental rules, policies and technical materials.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to effectively supervise, direct and lead others.
  • Ability to respond and manage potentially dangerous, hazardous, or emergency situations.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of initiative and responsibility.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft office applications and Brightspace is an asset.
