Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Water and Wastewater, you will be responsible for the maintenance and operations of Water and Wastewater infrastructure.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Water Quality Sampling
  • Wastewater and Storm Effluent Sampling
  • Maintenance and repair to water, wastewater, and storm infrastructure
  • Confined space entry
  • Respond and investigate sewer backups and storm flooding
  • Visual inspection of sanitary, storm manhole and valve chambers
  • Restoration Activities; sodding, concrete, interlock, and asphalt placement
  • Traffic control and signage set up
  • Sanitary sewer flushing
  • Supervise contractor during infrastructure repairs
  • Interacting with EMS, YRPH, MOL, Council and the public
  • Watermain flushing
  • Fire Flow testing
  • Perform utility (water, wastewater, storm) locates
  • Hydrant meter service and installation
  • Customer Service water off/on, water quality complaints
  • Perform regulatory sampling for lead, THM’s, Nitrates and Chlorine residual
  • UV system inspection
  • Perform inspection of PRV, drain and air valves
  • Camera inspections of wastewater and storm infrastructure
  • Inspection and maintenance of lift stations
  • Cross connection investigation and remediation
  • Provide spills response and cleanup; interact with MOECC and SAC
  • Operate heavy equipment (e.g., dump truck, loader, flusher, backhoe, compressor, etc.)
  • Associated responsibilities include:
    • Small work crews oversight
    • Maintain and complete legible records
    • Investigate and assist with follow-ups to enquiries from the public
  • All duties must be performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and associated Regulations, City policies, procedures and practices
  • Available for standby and shift work
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Water Distribution Subsystem Class 2 and Wastewater Collection Class 2 in good standing is required
  • First Aid CPR and AED training is an asset
  • Spills Response Training is an asst
  • Riggers Licence is an asset
  • Trench Training is an asset
  • Propane Training is an asset
  • Book 7 Training is an asset
  • 4 years prior experience including 2 years as an Operator II

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Successful completion of the Walkerton Clean Water Centre (WCWC) Entry-Level Course for Drinking Water Operators
  • Ontario Class "G" driver license in good standing and must provide a current satisfactory Ontario driver's abstract from the M.T.O.
  • Ability to obtain an Ontario Class "DZ" driver license within 6 months of the date of hire at the expense of the successful applicant
  • Demonstrated experience in water distribution, wastewater collection systems and sanitary pump station maintenance
  • Demonstrates the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage, and service
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and keep records and read and interpret engineering drawings
  • General knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and sewer use by-laws
  • Physically able and competent to perform the physical demands of this position under adverse weather and site conditions, including confined space entry
  • Ability to work overtime and meet the mandatory requirements of “standby” in accordance with the provisions of the C.U.P.E. Local 905 Collective Agreement
  • The shifts and hours are subject to change at management’s discretion in accordance with the C.U.P.E. Collective Agreement
  • Compensation will be determined based on the certification level of the successful applicant
  • The successful candidate will also be required to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check within one month of commencing the position. This position is a member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (C.U.P.E.).
