Hatch is seeking a Radiation Protection / Radiation Physics Engineer to support our multidisciplinary engineering projects. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of radiation physics, shielding calculations, and Canadian regulatory requirements. This role is not for a field RP technician but rather for a technical expert who can define radiation zoning, provide engineering inputs, and ensure regulatory compliance for various projects. This a contract hourly position for up to 12 months with the possibility of an extension.
In this role you will:
- Define and establish radiation zoning for engineering projects.
- Perform shielding calculations to ensure radiation exposure is minimized for workers, the public, and the environment.
- Provide technical input to multidisciplinary engineering teams (civil, mechanical, electrical, etc.) regarding radiation protection requirements.
- Ensure compliance with Canadian radiation protection regulations, including CNSC guidelines.
- Develop and review radiation protection plans, dose assessments, and ALARA strategies.
- Support licensing applications and regulatory submissions.
- Develop and implement waste handling strategies and processes for radioactive materials.
- Provide decommissioning and/or waste management plan development support, including waste characterization, and remediation strategies.
- Collaborate with clients, project teams, and regulators to ensure safe and effective project execution.
What you bring:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Radiation Physics, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field (e.g. any engineering degree but with RP experience on the job will qualify).
- Minimum 5 years of experience in radiation protection or radiation physics in an engineering environment.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian radiation protection regulations (e.g., CNSC requirements).
- Experience working on multidisciplinary engineering projects, providing radiation protection expertise.
- Proficiency in radiation shielding calculations and dose assessment methodologies.
- Ability to translate technical radiation protection requirements into engineering design inputs.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Preferred:
- Professional Engineering (P.Eng) designation in Canada or eligibility to obtain it.
- Experience with radiation transport codes such as MCNP, SCALE, ORIGEN, MicroShield, or similar.
- Familiarity with radiation monitoring and detection technologies.
- Understanding of international radiation protection regulations, including IAEA safety standards and guidelines.
- Experience with radiation monitoring tools and the ability to select appropriate PPE for radiation protection (asset).
- Experience in waste characterization (asset).
- Certifications (considered assets):
- Canadian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA) Registered Radiation Safety Professional (RRSP) certification.
- American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) Certified Health Physicist (CHP) credential.
Additional Assets:
Experience or familiarity with the following software and tools will be considered an asset:
- Radiation Transport & Shielding Analysis: Attila, PHITS, FLUKA
- Dose Assessment & Radiation Safety Modeling: VARSKIN, IMBA Professional Plus, GENII
- Regulatory Compliance & Licensing Support: RADTRAD, RESRAD
