Position Overview

Reporting to the President, The Senior Quality Manager is responsible for leading our quality assurance program across all steel fabrication and construction operations. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive quality management systems that ensure compliance with industry standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements while driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Management Systems

  • Develop, implement, and maintain quality management systems and other relevant standards (AWS D1.1, AISC, CSA, etc.)
  • Establish quality policies, procedures, and work instructions for fabrication and construction processes
  • Conduct regular internal audits and coordinate external certification audits
  • Manage non-conformance reporting systems and corrective/preventive action processes
  • Manage and maintain document control system for all company Standard Operating Procedures.

Steel Fabrication Quality Control

  • Oversee quality control of structural steel fabrication processes including cutting, welding, assembly, and finishing
  • Ensure compliance with welding procedure specifications (WPS) and procedure qualification records (PQR)
  • Monitor dimensional accuracy, material traceability, and surface preparation standards
  • Coordinate with certified welding inspectors (CWI) and non-destructive testing (NDT) technicians

Construction Quality Assurance

  • Develop and implement quality assurance plans for construction projects
  • Conduct pre-construction quality meetings and coordinate with project teams
  • Oversee field inspection activities and ensure compliance with construction specifications
  • Manage quality documentation and reporting for project deliverables

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead and mentor a team of quality engineers, inspectors, and technicians
  • Provide training on quality procedures, inspection techniques, and industry standards
  • Coordinate with HR on quality-related competency assessments and certification requirements
  • Foster a culture of quality awareness and continuous improvement

Supplier & Vendor Management

  • Develop and maintain approved vendor lists and qualification criteria
  • Conduct supplier audits and performance evaluations
  • Manage incoming material inspection and testing programs
  • Coordinate with procurement on quality-related supplier issues

Certifications, Regulatory Compliance & Safety

  • Lead certification/recertification processes (ICC, CWB, AISC, CISC, SJI, etc.)
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements
  • Participate in safety committees and integrate quality considerations into safety protocols
  • Maintain awareness of industry codes and standards updates
  • Coordinate with environmental compliance initiatives

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Materials Science, or related technical field
  • Minimum 8-10 years of quality management experience in steel fabrication or heavy construction
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory or management experience

Technical Skills & Certifications

  • Certified Quality Manager (CQM) or similar ASQ certification preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of welding codes (AWS D1.1, D1.5) and construction standards
  • Experience with NDT methods including ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing
  • Proficiency in quality management software and inspection equipment
  • Understanding of structural steel detailing and fabrication processes
  • Experience with lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) preferred
  • Structural Steel related certification program knowledge (ICC, CWB, AISC, CISC, SJI, etc.)
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license preferred but not required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of project management principles and software
  • Familiarity with building information modeling (BIM) systems
  • Previous experience in both shop fabrication and field construction environments

Working Conditions

  • Approximately 50% of time spent in head office in Vaughan and field operations, 50% of time spent in plants located mostly in Niagara region
  • Office and manufacturing facility environment
  • Regular site visits to construction projects and occasional travel to supplier facilities
  • Standard business hours with flexibility required for strategic priorities
