Overall Accountability

The Pension Specialist provides support and direction to two large employee pension plans for the Calgary Catholic School District, assuring compliance with applicable legislation, plan provisions, and organizational policies.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Administers employee enrollments, terminations, status changes, personal information changes, payroll deductions and adjustments, and prior service buyback payments

  • Accountable for employee data in the Human Capital Management System and external provider systems

  • Provides explanation of information and assistance to employees, pension providers and knowledgeable of pension providers resources for employees

  • Resource for Payroll and other People Services Areas

  • Conducts audits to guarantee data integrity including monthly balancing in ATRF system

  • Ensures compliance with pension plan legislation, plan provisions and the District’s practices, procedures and policies

  • Completes timely annual year-end balancing and closing for ATRF and LAPP

  • Supports and participates in the triennial external LAPP audit

  • Prepares bi-weekly LAPP EFT requisition for payment

  • Contributes to and supports broader group benefits administration

Qualifications

  • High school diploma

  • Post-secondary education in the area of employee pensions

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the area of pensions and/or total compensation

  • Experience with an integrated Human Capital Management System, PeopleSoft

  • Experience in Payroll an asset

  • Experience with Service Now an asset

  • Experience with Public Sector Plans (e.g., LAPP, ATRF) an asset

  • Experience with large, complex organizations an asset

  • Professional certificates from recognized body preferred (CEBS)

  • Strong understanding of the principles, concepts and practices of pension administration, including the relevant acts and legislation.

  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to explain complex pension information clearly and professionally

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Attention to detail and accuracy

  • Exemplary interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to deal with confidential material in a manner demonstrating sound judgment and diplomacy

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and advanced Excel skills

  • Time management and prioritization skills
