Summary of Function:

Under the supervision of the Food Services Supervisor, the Cook/Baker is responsible for the preparation and service of well-balanced meals to residents of the Pembroke Civic Complex/Mackay Centre, following established menus while considering therapeutic diets and resident’s preference in consultation with the supervisor. Responsibilities will be performed in accordance with food handling and safety standards, Canada’s Food Guide, and within the framework of Carefor Health and Community Services policies, procedures, and standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the operation of all kitchen equipment
  • Provides information to supervisor to enable effective meal planning
  • Monitoring and recording equipment readings i.e. temperature of fridges
  • Preparing and cooking food according to sanitation and standardized guidelines pertaining to food preparation
  • Receiving and checking accuracy of food and supply orders and reporting concerning to supervisor or designate
  • Providing direction to other members of the dietary staff
  • Maintaining a clean, safe environment
  • Performing tasks according to duty sheet
  • Setting up equipment and supplies for food preparation
  • Prepares meals, dessert, and/or snacks following standardized approved recipes, being careful to minimize waste and leftovers, and cook food according to sanitation and standardized guidelines pertaining to food preparation
  • Cleanup of kitchen area
  • Ensuring timely service of meals
  • Handling and storing all left over foods according to food handling guidelines
  • Makes observations of resident behaviour and intervenes according to job expectation e.g. nutritional intake, disruptive behaviour in dining room, attendance for meals, general concerns affecting operations of the dietary department
  • Report observed concerns to supervisor or designate
  • Becoming familiar with individual resident’s dietary preferences, allergies, and diet restrictions
  • Assisting residents, if needed, to cut food or pour beverages
  • Promptly reports any problems, accidents, emergency situations, and complaints of residents regarding service to the supervisor or designate
  • Functions and reports in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and Carefor policies and procedures
  • Reports the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which he/she is aware and which may endanger him/herself or another worker
  • Reports any violations of the Health and Safety Act or the regulations, or the existence of any hazard
  • Ensures all workplace incidents are reported in a timely manner in accordance with legislation, and Carefor policies and procedures for workplace injuries and incidents
  • Performing other duties/tasks as assigned by manager

Qualifications:

  • Cook Certification from approved College, or an acceptable combination of education and experience may also be considered
  • Food Handling and Safety certificate
  • WHMIS certification

Experience:

  • Experience/Knowledge of creating menus
  • Experience providing leadership to kitchen staff
  • Experience with food preparation
  • Experience cooking meals for large groups
  • Experience using kitchen equipment
  • Experience in customer service
  • Experience working with elderly
  • Experience working in nursing home or similar environment would be considered an asset

Skills:

  • Ability to understand oral and written directions
  • Ability to calculate recipe quantities
  • Ability and available to fulfill the shift rotation designed for position (early morning, late evening, and weekends)
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to handle the temperatures of working in a kitchen environment
  • Effective communication skills (verbal, written)
  • Dependable, trustworthy, compassionate with good work habits
  • Interested in supporting the elderly and disabled adults
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to bend, sit, stand, kneel for short periods of time
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety as relates to job

Union Position: Liuna

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible

Hours per Pay Period: 14 hours bi-weekly or 0.2 FTE

Starting Rate: $20.42 per hour
