ABOUT THE ROLE
This position is responsible for conducting provincially mandated support income reviews, investigations and assisting clients, under various provincial Acts to stabilize income sources and maximize support income. Assists in reducing program financial loss through recovery of payments. Provides financial literacy assistance to customers. Ensures court ordered support payments or private support arrangements are made and acts on behalf of the Region in Superior Court of Justice and other quasi-judicial settings.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Represents the Region’s interests at legal proceedings to make submissions, conduct examinations and cross-examinations of witnesses and clarify the Region’s policy in support applications, default hearings, variation applications and other motions or appeals.

  • Prepares, reviews, and submits a wide range of financial and legal documents.

  • Liaises with a variety of external stakeholders with respect to Family Law cases

  • Interviews and negotiates with customers, respondents, and their lawyers to reach settlements.

  • Assists customers in court navigation and the completion of financial and legal documents. Provides advice and direction when appropriate to negotiate settlements and acts as a subject matter expert.

  • Assists customers by providing financial literacy education.

  • Assess customers’ needs for legal representation and completes referrals to appropriate resources.

  • Monitors and pursues payment of new and existing support monies owed.

  • Completes file reviews, audits, and re-documentations, as required, to assess compliance with regulations and policies.

  • Researches and investigates information to produce decisions in accordance with legislation and policies.

  • Prepares and submits regular statistical records, as required.

  • Responds to inquiries and resolves concerns, as appropriate.

  • Ensures that services provided meet Regional customer service standards.

  • Participates on committees, and work groups, as assigned.

  • Manages information in accordance with legislation and corporate standards.

  • Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Successful completion of a Community College Diploma in Social Services or related program with emphasis on social services or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years direct casework experience, including experience in the social services income maintenance fields.
  • Satisfactory Police Criminal Background Check.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant Legislation, Standards, Acts and Regulations.
  • Strong mathematical ability to interpret and apply to financial documentation.
  • Knowledge of court rules, case law and protocol, including examination, cross-examination, making submissions and presenting documentary evidence to initiate and or conduct court proceedings.
  • Demonstrated ability in the Region’s core competencies.
