Salary Range: $51,800 - $61,700 per year

JOB SUMMARY

As the 40th anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Man In Motion World Tour takes place over the coming two years, The Rick Hansen Foundation is embarking on one of the largest fundraising campaigns in our history to continue our legacy of removing barriers for people with disabilities. To support this effort, we are seeking a talented and mission-driven Philanthropy Writer to join our team who will be responsible for crafting compelling written materials that inspire donors and communicate the impact of our work. The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller with a passion for social change and a deep understanding of nonprofit fundraising, particularly for major gift and campaign fundraising.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Philanthropy Writer will report to the Senior Director, Awareness, with a secondary reporting line to the Director, Resource Development. This position will also work closely with both the Marcomm and Resource Development teams, and will liaise with program and department units to help articulate the vision and impact of Foundation programs and initiatives.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develops high quality, donor-centric content to support the engagement of major donors, corporate partners and other supporters through the fundraising cycle. This includes but is not limited to a new Legacy Fund Campaign case for support, proposals, grant applications, stewardship reports and appeals;

  • Works closely with internal teams and external contacts to develop compelling impact materials, stories and blogs;

  • Develops copy to support a donor centric website;

  • Ensures completeness, accuracy and consistency of Rick Hansen’s story and ensures it’s integrated into communications;

  • Helps to develop and maintain key messages for the Foundation and its programs and initiatives;

  • Proofreads all communications to ensure inclusive language, RHF tone of voice, consistency with Foundation key messaging, and use of proper grammar, punctuation and spelling;

  • Works with various deadlines and ensures multiple, overlapping deadlines are met;

  • Attends and contributes to team meetings and brainstorms; and

  • Performs other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of education, experience and skills/behaviours will be considered.

Education: Bachelor’s degree, certificate or diploma in English, Communications, Journalism, Copywriting, Public Relations, or a related field. A degree in Nonprofit Management or Public Administration paired with writing experience is an asset.

Preference given to candidates with major gift and campaign writing experience.

Experience/Knowledge

  • Minimum 3 years of writing experience in development/fundraising, communications, or related field;

  • Demonstrated experience across various communication channels in developing compelling, donor-centric communications to drive donor support, including proposals, stewardship reports, impact reports and appeals;

  • Experience with data gathering by means of interviews, database research, etc.

  • Knowledge of best practices for case statements, major gift and capital campaigns;

  • Strong understanding of fundraising principles, donor engagement strategies, and the donor lifecycle;

  • Understanding of inclusive language and accessible communications; and

  • Knowledge of and passion for issues related to people with disabilities is an asset.

Skills/Behaviours

  • Exceptional writing skills - ability to write in a clear, persuasive, and donor-centric voice;

  • Ability to synthesize abstract concepts and ideas into clear, concise and compelling narratives;

  • Comfort working with program metrics, outcomes, and impact data;

  • Ability to write for various audiences, settings and tones;

  • Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills;

  • Ability to be thorough and accurate, with a high level of attention to detail;

  • Proven grammar, editing, and proofreading skills;

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word;

  • Experience with CRM systems such as Salesforce is an asset;

  • Ability to work independently and effectively within a deadline-driven environment; and

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals in an inclusive and respectful manner.
