Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Operations Superintendent and direction of the Power Electrician Foreman, this position installs, maintains, tests and repairs substation equipment, street lighting systems, and underground transmission and distribution facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, tests and repairs substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, AC and DC power supplies, tap changers, protective relaying and other related equipment.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs the network system.
  • Tests, analyzes and purifies insulating oils for transformers and switches.
  • Maintains, tests and repairs distribution transformers, street light fixtures, street light relays and other similar equipment.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs building or structural wiring and fixtures.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs substation grounding and fencing.
  • Installs cable splices and terminations on lead-covered cables and solid dielectric cables at various voltage levels.
  • Uses and maintains various specialized, power and general tools pertaining to the trade.
  • Uses protective equipment such as insulated gloves, hoods, blankets and hot-line tools for work on energized equipment.
  • Participates in the periodic testing of protective equipment.
  • Participates in safety, first aid and training programs, and in the training of apprentices.
  • Uses, and ensures adherence to proper work procedures, safety standards, construction standards and other specifications.
  • Inspects work being performed by contractors, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Requirements

  • Grade 12 education.

  • Possession of an unrestricted Saskatchewan Journeyman Electrician Certificate.

  • Completion of Saskatoon Light and Power Electrician Apprenticeship or two years' experience as Journeyman Electrician in electric utility or related electric power field.

  • Possession of, or ability to successfully complete within 6 months after date of hire, a valid Saskatchewan Class 1A Driver’s Licence.

  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of construction, repair and maintenance of electrical equipment in electrical substations and distribution systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code Part I and Bylaws.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned duties outside under varying weather conditions.

Weekly Hours: 37.33

Salary Range: $46.94 CAD per hour (2023 rates)
