About the role

Job description

Board Member Position Postings:

Note: All positions are volunteer and not paid. Time commitment requirements are 2-4 hours a month

Would you like to serve your community? Do you feel passionate about literacy, math basic skills and digital literacy for those who might have been left out of the school system, fallen thru the cracks or not serviced by the Ontario education system? Do you have management skills that you could share to help run a vibrant and passionate organization? Then The Learning Place (TLP) is for you!! We are looking for candidates that might like to hold volunteer executive or member positions on our board who have a variety of operational skills and various leadership experiences. We would love to hear from you.

Board Positions would entail the following responsibilities:

Non-executive Board person:

  • Understand and demonstrate a commitment to the organization’s mission and programs

  • Keep up to date with issues and trends that affect the organization and the sector

  • Prepare for meetings by reading agendas, minutes, reports and other documentation required to actively participate in them

  • Attend meetings regularly

  • Participate in at least 1 sub-committee as agreed to by board

  • Help with events as agreed to by the board and various internal sub-committees

  • Contribute skills and knowledge by participating actively in meetings and committee work

  • Make inquiries when clarification or more information is needed

  • Understand and monitor the organization’s financial affairs

  • Avoid any potential conflicts of interest

  • Understand and maintain confidentiality about students and the organization

  • Ensure the organization is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements

Executive Board Member Positions

Actively Seeking: Treasurer

  • Same as above with added responsibilities for the below:

  • Provides support to ED in managing the finances of the organization, including the board’s review of and action related to, financial responsibilities

  • Ensures appropriate financial reports are made available to the board

  • Regularly reports to board on key financial events, trends, concerns, and assessment of fiscal health if applicable.

  • Provides annual budget to the board for members’ approval

  • Ensures development and board review of financial procedures and systems

  • Chairs the Finance Committee and prepares agendas for meetings

  • Recommends to the board whether the organization should have an audit

  • Assists in the selection of an auditor, if needed, and meets with him or her annually
