The Policy Alignment and Legislation Support team has a great opportunity for a Senior Legislative Advisor to help support the department’s dynamic policy and legislative agenda.

Working with the Manager of Policy Alignment and Legislation, you will:

Provide comprehensive services to coordinate and develop legislation in support of the department’s legislative agenda.

Review and analyze diverse information to support the development of acts, regulations and ministerial orders that are consistent with the direction of the department and the Government of Alberta (GOA).

Translate policy direction and help determine legislative recommendations, draft legislative supporting documentation, work closely with Environmental Law Team and Legislative Counsel Office, and coordinate and manage initiatives through the cabinet decision-making process.

Utilize your strong analytical and interpersonal skills to collaborate with staff throughout the department when identifying legislative issues.

Clarify impacts of various legislative options; provide planning and decision-making process advice; and develop input and recommendations for the consideration of EPA’s executive team.

Lead and supervise operational staff within the legislative planning team.

Qualifications
University degree in a related field such as political science, public administration, law, environmental policy, or a social science discipline, plus a minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible related experience in legislative and policy development, regulatory planning, or government decision-making processes.
Equivalency: Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of: one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

Extensive knowledge of the government legislative and regulatory processes, including Cabinet and Executive Council procedures.

Experience preparing legislative instruments such as Orders in Council and ministerial orders and associated drafting instructions and briefing materials.

Strong understanding of legislative frameworks and the hierarchy of legislative tools in the Canadian context.
-
Experience leading or coordinating policy and legislative initiatives in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
-
Well-developed skills in strategic planning, research, and analysis, with the ability to synthesize complex information and provide sound legislative advice.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong attention to detail and ability to write concisely.

Strong project management and leadership skills, including experience supervising or mentoring team members.

Experience working directly with the Legislative Counsel Office, Executive Council, and Cabinet in the development of legislation and regulations.

Familiarity with environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks relevant to Environment and Protected Areas.

This is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday.
