Job Summary
The Kwiis hen niip & DECLARE BC Manager oversees operations and administrative work for the Principal Investigator(s) and other study personnel for the CIHR-funded Kwiis hen niip— Change research study and the UBC Faculty of Medicine-funded DECLARE BC [Disparities in Emergency Care: Lessons and Actions for Remote Equity] project. The incumbent will work closely within the existing investigative team to facilitate, oversee and coordinate research activities, and supervise research staff and trainees. Tasks include planning, developing and reviewing ethics and data management protocols; overseeing compliance of research activities with ethics and COVID safety guidelines; liaising and coordinating meetings with investigative team, advisory team and stakeholders; reviewing the overall progress and budget of the projects; developing reports for study partners and granting agencies; and supporting and executing strategic planning for the projects.
Organizational Status
The vision of the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine is to be a provincially integrated Department committed to clinical and academic leadership in the creation and exchange of knowledge to promote excellence in emergency care. Our faculty members across the province have had an impressive record of research and discovery and in providing high-quality training in emergency care. Our research and innovation initiatives include fourteen successful programs related to prevention of emergencies, improving clinical care, and system improvements. Our Emergency Medicine Royal College residency training program, distributed across four program sites, is the largest in the country. The Department of Emergency Medicine has also played a leadership role in the development and implementation of the BC Emergency Medicine Network, which integrates and translates knowledge to support exceptional emergency care across the province and is working to enhance support for emergency practitioners in all settings: urban, rural, remote, and Indigenous.
This position belongs to the UBC Department of Emergency Medicine Kwiis hen niip [Change] project and DECLARE BC [Disparities in Emergency Care: Lessons and Actions for Remote Equity] project, which together are addressing persisting gaps in emergency care in remote First Nations communities. The Kwiis hen niip research study is a 6-year (2020-2026) CIHR funded research study that recently received funding from UBC to extend the knowledge translation and scale up work for 3 more years (January 2025 – December 2027). The project started as a Nation-based project in Nuu-chah-nulth territories, involving a partnership between Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, UBC Department of Emergency Medicine, First Nations Health Authority, Emergency Care BC, BC Emergency Health Services and four remote Nuu-chah-nulth Nations: Ahousaht, Hesquiaht, Kyuquot-Checleseht, and Tla-o-qui-aht). We are now embarking on the next phase of our project, DECLARE BC, which involves extending the work and what we have learned through the Kwiis hen niip Project to understand and advocate for better emergency care in remote First Nations communities across the entire province of BC.
Work Performed
- Facilitates, and coordinates research activities of Kwiis hen niip and DECLARE BC projects.
- Plans, develops and reviews ethics and data management protocols.
- Prepares and oversees research ethics board (REB) submissions, amendments and renewals.
- Develops progress and financial reports for study partners and granting agencies.
- Supervises and mentors research staff and trainees.
- Liaises with investigative team, advisory team, Nation leaders, and stakeholders.
- Oversees compliance of research activities with ethics and COVID safety guidelines.
- Developing, drafting and editing study materials, including informed consent forms, interview guides and recruitment materials.
- Oversees research study progress by ensuring alignment with project timelines, maintaining comprehensive project records, and identifying potential risks, delays, or operational challenges.
- Drives engagement by reporting on research progress, issues, and key developments to the investigative and advisory teams.
- Oversees data collection processes, recruitment, interviewing/ focus group facilitation, data analysis, and reporting of findings.
- Contributes to resource planning and allocation by aligning budget projections and resource availability.
- Oversees and reviews project budget and coordinates contracts.
- Prepares project-related abstracts, manuscripts, reports, presentations, posters, and lay summaries for scientific dissemination and public relations.
- Manages external and internal communications related to the project, including responding to media and stakeholder inquiries.
- Engages directly with remote First Nations communities through on-site research activities, including travel to field locations as needed.
- Leads investigator meetings and community meetings.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Kwiis hen niip & DECLARE BC Manager is required to conduct all position-related tasks in a professional and ethical manner and to maintain strict confidentiality where required. Working closely with other members of the research team, the Kwiis hen niip & DECLARE BC Manager ensures that study procedures are performed consistent with the study protocols, applicable funding requirements, ethical guidelines, and any relevant policies or protocols. Inappropriate disclosure of research participants' personal information would contravene privacy legislation and could result in legal action. Establishing effective working relationships within the team and with other study stakeholders is essential in the success of the projects. Inability to foster effective working relationships or engage in appropriate consultation with project leads and designated community representatives may affect the integrity of the studies and the successful and timely completion of the research studies.
Supervision Received
The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Nominated Principal Investigator, Dr. Jim Christenson. The Kwiis hen niip & DECLARE BC Manager is also accountable to the projects’ investigative teams. The incumbent is expected to work independently with minimal direction on a day-to-day basis, and exercise considerable judgment and initiative in duties and responsibilities.
Supervision Given
The Kwiis hen niip & DECLARE BC Manager will provide supervision and oversee the day-to-day tasks of research staff, including the community coordinator and postdoctoral fellow. The Kwiis hen niip & DECLARE BC Manager will be responsible for delegating and supervising specific responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
