Duties and Responsibilities:
Casual Assignment
Carleton University has a current opening for a casual animal attendant. Candidate must have the ability to work 1-2 weekends a month. The ideal candidate would also be available over holidays and occasionally Mon-Fri 8-4pm as needed to replace full time staff on vacation. This position may provide an opportunity for part-time to full-time hours eventually
The incumbent will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
- Independently perform daily/weekend animal checks and husbandry for rodents and aquatic species
- Document clinical cases and competently administer oral, topical and injectable treatments as directed by the veterinarian or supervisor
- Wean pups following Carleton Universities Standard Operating Procedures
- Able to lift and move large feed and bedding bags as required
- Prepare cage and bottle supplies for daily husbandry
- Restock supplies in all areas of the facility as required
- Participate in laundry duties
- Disinfect holding rooms and surgical suites
- Monitor rodents post-operatively and assist with post-op care
- Should be comfortable with euthanasia techniques and tissue collection
- Must have effective oral and written communication skills and work effectively as a team member
- Works with large equipment such as a cage washer
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications:
The incumbent must possess the following physical qualifications:
- Ability to consistently stand and sit for long periods of time
- Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds
- No known allergies to rats or mice
Education and Experience:
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
- Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technology Diploma
- Asset of one-year experience in a rodent husbandry
